Forest Park is a city in Clayton County, Georgia. It is located just south of the Atlanta city limits, within the Atlanta metropolitan area. The area now known as Forest Park was originally home to two Creek Indian tribes, the Muscogee (also known as the Creek) and the Cherokee. In the early 1800s, white settlers began moving into the area, and the two tribes signed a treaty in 1821 ceding their land to the United States.
In 1837, a man named John H. Bemiss bought 633 acres of land in the area for $1,000, and the following year, he built a tavern on what is now Main Street. The area around the tavern became known as Bemiss Station, and it soon became a stop on the Georgia Railroad. In 1887, Bemiss Station was renamed Forest Park, and the town was incorporated in 1895.
