RVING AT THE EVENT

Where to Camp Near the Kodiak Crab Festival

It's important to note that RV camping near Kodiak is limited, so you'll need to plan accordingly. However, there are sites like Kodiak Coast Guard Base MWR RV Park (for eligible guests) and Buskin River State Recreation Site that offer accommodations for larger Class A RV rentals. If you're traveling in a Class C RV rental, you'll find it easier to secure a spot because they require less space and fit into a wider range of sites. The Pasagshak State Recreation Site is another popular camping spot for RV travelers. It is located about 25 miles from Kodiak and offers campsites for larger RVs. The coastal scenery and beach access provide a peaceful, scenic setting for those wanting to relax by the water. However, full hookups are not available at this site. The Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park Campground is only 5 miles from downtown. This site features narrow roads, making it better for smaller RVs. Picnic tables, toilets, and water access are available but not full hookups. People staying here frequently enjoy its nearby ocean cliffs and hiking trails.

RV Rental Tips for the Kodiak Crab Festival

With RV camping sites so limited, it's best to secure your spot several months in advance. You should also keep in mind that most RV camping spots do not come with full hookups. Planning your water, power, and waste storage is crucial to having a good time and making sure you don’t run out of essential resources. You should also be mindful of your RV rental's dimensions. The roads and campgrounds running through Kodiak are often narrow and winding, which can complicate trying to maneuver larger rigs.

WHERE TO STAY

If you choose not to camp in your RV, you can stay in one of the hotels on Kodiak Island. The Best Western Kodiak Inn is a good option as is the Kodiak Compass Suites. Each of these hotels provides convenient amenities like free Wi-Fi, comfortable rooms, and easy access to downtown Kodiak. The Compass Suites even gives you access to large freezers so that you can store any meat that you've gotten from hunting.

HOW TO GET THERE

You can't drive directly to the island because it's about 30 miles out to sea, which is too long for a bridge. The only ways to get there are to fly or to take the ferry. The ferry terminal is in Homer, Alaska. To get there, follow Route 1 from Anchorage. It's a 4.5-hour trip in good weather. From Homer, it's about a 10-hour ferry ride to the island. The ferry is large enough to accommodate RVs, with pricing based on the total length of your vehicle. If you have a fifth wheel or other towed RV, your combined length will determine the overall cost. Alternatively, you can choose to fly to Kodiak Island from Anchorage and then rent your RV once you're there.

PARKING

The Kodiak Crab Festival doesn't have its own dedicated parking. You'll have to choose one of the municipal parking lots in town. It would be wise to check with the lots before you arrive on the island because some of them cannot accommodate RVs at all, let alone big ones. The airport offers parking, but it's generally for long-term customers. Along the roads that parallel the beaches outside of town, you may find parking lots that can accommodate RVs, but you will then have to arrange transport into town. Always secure your RV and keep all food inside a bear-proof container no matter where you park.

TICKETS & PRICING

Most of the events at the Kodiak Crab Festival are free. Some activities, such as rides, games, and special attractions, require tickets or wristbands. The event's Facebook page says that unlimited carnival wristbands will be available, or you can purchase individual ride and game tickets for certain attractions. • Presale 5-Day Crab Pass: $115 (available through May 20) • Presale 1-Day Crab Pass: $45 (available through May 20) • Regular Price 5-Day Crab Pass: $135 (May 21–May 25) • Regular Price 1-Day Crab Pass: $50 (May 21–May 25) • Gelly Ball 5-Play Punch Card: $20
