What are the most popular beaches in Wyoming?

You probably don’t think of beaches when you think of Wyoming, but this western state has many beaches along the lakes, rivers, and reservoirs that visitors and locals can enjoy. From the lakes in Grand Teton National Park to rivers warmed by hot springs to state parks and recreation areas, you’ll find popular beaches throughout the state.

Here are some of our favorite Wyoming beaches for you to explore on your RV trip.

1. String Lake

Grand Teton National Park has several gorgeous lakes to visit, but String Lake is a favorite for many people. Arrive early to get a parking spot and hit the beach! The beach has shallow water without many waves, so it’s great for swimming with kids. You can also spend time on the water with stand up paddleboards or paddle boats while enjoying the incredible mountain views.

Things to do near String Lake: Located just down the road from Jackson Hole, WY, Grand Teton National Park is close to Yellowstone National Park. It’s also not far at all from Bridger-Teton National Forest and Shoshone National Forest. Here are some great RV rentals nearby.

2. Colter Bay

Another great beach in Grant Teton National Park is Colter Bay on Jackson Lake. The views of the mountains and the cool lake water makes this a fantastic beach to swim, sunbathe, or explore. It’s a rocky beach, so water shoes are recommended. You can also rent boats at the marina if you’d like to kayak or canoe, and you can also fish on the lake. There’s even the Colter Bay Campground nearby so you can stay close to the water.

3 Alcova Reservoir

Located southwest of Casper, WY is the Alcova Reservoir. There are several sandy beaches along the reservoir, along with six campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails, and eight boat ramps. Try Sandy Beach for swimming, beach volleyballs, and building sandcastles. The Children’s Swim Beach is great for kids with shallow water and a playground area. There’s also a marina that rents stand up paddleboards, boats, kayaks, and bikes, along with a restaurant and store to pick up any supplies needed for your camping trip.

Things to do near Alcova Reservoir: Casper is the closest larger city, and if you’re an Oregon Trail history buff, you can visit Guernsey State Park and the Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic Site to view preserved wagon ruts from the Oregon Trail, located nearby. 4 Firehole River Swimming Area

The lakes in Yellowstone National Park tend to be too cold for swimming, but Firehole River Swimming Area along Firehole River is a natural swimming area that is typically open during the summer months. There’s no parking lot, but you can park along the road and head down a set of wooden stairs to the beach. It’s a rocky shore, so water shoes are definitely recommended. And just keep in mind that it’s not a hot spring swimming area – the water is cold like a typical river! Be sure to check the National Park Service website to see if the area is open before you go.

Things to do near Firehole River Swimming Area: Along with all the epic views you’ll find in Yellowstone National Park itself, it’s only a short drive away from Grand Teton National Park, as well as Jackson Hole, Wyoming where you can find skiing, shopping, and amazing food options. 5. Boysen Reservoir

Boysen State Park is the largest state park in Wyoming and is home to Boysen Reservoir. The reservoir has 76 miles of shoreline and a designated swimming beach at Boysen Campground. Besides swimming, the lake is also fantastic for boating, water skiing, fishing, and even wildlife viewing.

Things to do near Boysen Reservoir: Keep the water adventures going with Hot Springs State Park, which is located only 20 minutes away. There’s also the Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway for a beautiful drive through the rugged landscape.

6. Keyhole State Park

Another fantastic state park in Wyoming is Keyhole State Park. This park has a 14,000-acre reservoir with excellent fishing opportunities and plenty of water activities. There’s a swimming beach and a marina with boats and waterskiing. You can also hike through the park, as well as kayak and snorkel on the reservoir.

7. Leigh Lake

Another breathtaking lake in Grand Teton National Park is Leigh Lake. The gorgeous blue waters and rocky beach are perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and picnicking. It’s a bit of a hike to the lake down Leigh Lake Trail, making it less crowded than the other lakes in Grand Teton National Park, but a perfect place to take in the views and a bit of quiet time in nature.

Things to do near Leigh Lake: Explore the rest of Grand Teton National Park, then head over to Yellowstone National Park. It’s also not far at all from Bridger-Teton National Forest and Shoshone National Forest.

8. Fremont Lake

Situated in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, Fremont Lake is the second largest lake in Wyoming. And Sandy Beach at Fremont Lake is a beach that’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, and other water activities. Once you’re tired of the beach, visit the picnic area for lunch. There are even dry camping spaces near the lake if you’d like to stay for the weekend.

Things to do near Fremont Lake: Fremont Lake is south of Grand Teton National Park and Jackson, Wyoming. Yellowstone National Park is also not far away. Here are some great RV rentals in the area.

9. Bighorn Lake

Filled with stunning views of the canyons, Bighorn Lake in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is impressive with 1,000 foot tall cliffs that surround the lake. It’s a fantastic place to boat, canoe, and kayak. You can bring your own boat or rent one from the marina in the South District in Lovell, WY. They also have camp spots right along the river.

Things to do near Bighorn Lake: You can explore the rest of Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area for epic views and trails. Bighorn Lake is in northern Wyoming near the border of Montana, so it’s easy to head north, or head west to Cody, WY and Yellowstone National Park.

10. Flaming Gorge Reservoir

In the southwestern part of the state on the border of Utah lies Flaming Gorge Reservoir in Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Buckboard Marina has boat rentals, and the reservoir itself is great for boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming and more. It’s also well known for excellent trout fishing. If you need some time off the water, you can also tour Flaming Gorge Dam, and there are many hiking and biking trails nearby.

Things to do near Flaming Gorge Reservoir: The Reservoir is fairly remote, and Rock Springs is one of the closest towns in Wyoming.
