Outlaw Cave Trail

Outlaw Cave Trail offers a wonderful hike at this BLM site. This out-and-back trail is narrow and precarious. The loose gravel and a steep slope allow hikers to skid down in a controlled freefall, catching hold of shrubs and rocks to remain upright. Long pants and sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended.

The scenic Middle Fork of the Powder River is renowned for fly fishing. Home to plenty of browns and rainbows, this iconic river is every fly fisher's dream fishing spot. This river hosts 3,000-5,000 trout per mile, and the browns and rainbows can be over 20 inches long. Fishing can be relatively challenging here, so bring your best fishing skills and rod and reel as you go after these species. 

Boysen Reservoir is also a perfect spot for fishing and an array of water-based activities. This reservoir provides approximately 76 miles of shoreline where you can catch walleye, perch, sauger, and crappie, and brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout.

A lot of unique animals tend to wander around Middle Fork of the Powder River Campground. Keep your eyes open, and you'll probably spot white-tailed deer, black bear, mountain lion, mule deer, moose, and elk.

Middle Fork of the Powder River Campground makes a perfect destination for hunters to stay. You can take your chances against bighorn sheep, pronghorn, mountain lion, black bear, and moose. To hunt in the area, ensure you have all the hunting licenses required and comply with Wyoming Game and Fish Commission regulations.

OHV Riding

Off-highway riding is a popular activity in the Middle Fork of the Powder River Campground. This sport is allowed on the roads surrounding the river park and offers scenic views of the area. At the nearby Bighorn National Forest, motorized vehicles are only allowed on selected trails.

While there's no BLM RV camping at the Middle Fork of the Powder River Campground, there are a few RV camping options nearby. Boysen State Park features numerous RV sites spread across four campsites. Although these sites don't offer hookups, you can use the hydrants positioned in several convenient spots throughout the area. There's also a dump station at the park's headquarters.

The campground features five campsites with a restroom, fire rings, and drinking water. These camping sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The nearby Outlaw Cave Campground also offers BLM free camping options. There are 12 camping sites with a vault toilet, a fire ring, and picnic tables. There's no trash collection nor water, so pack out all garbage and come with enough drinking water.

Before you set for your BLM camping trip, ensure you search for "BLM camping near me" to find the best places to stay throughout your trip. Middle Fork of the Powder River Campground remains open from May through September and allows for stays of up to 14 days within a month. Insects tend to be present during warmer months, so carry bug repellant. 

While driving to this campground, ensure you keep your vehicles on the designated paths. If you plan to travel beyond the campground, ensure you have a high-clearance car because some routes are primitive and rough. To reach the Middle Fork of the Powder River Campground from Ten Sleep, follow State Highway 434 toward the south until you get to Big Trails. Turn left on Dry Farm Road, and travel for about 13 miles to Hazelton Road. Take a right, drive for about 17 miles, and you'll reach the campground.
