Log Gulch Recreation Site is a popular Bureau of Land Management (BLM) camping location in Montana. This BLM site forms a small portion of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail with Holter Lake offering many outdoor activities. A boat ramp is available that provides access to the excellent boating and fishing opportunities at Holter Lake.

Jackson Peak Trail

The Jackson Peak Trail is an out-and-back trail taking you to the peak's summit. The trail is best used for hiking and mountain biking. The challenge of this trail comes from its elevation of over 1,300 feet.

Merriweather Canyon to Refrigerator Canyon

The trail from Merriweather Canyon to Refrigerator Canyon is interesting for its starting point. It starts at Merriweather picnic area, which is only accessible by boat. Hikers need excellent reserves of stamina to complete the 17.8-mile trail that rises over 3,700 feet. This trail is best completed in the summer months because of its average walk time being over 10 hours.

Fishing & Boating

Log Gulch Recreation Area is located beside Holter Lake on the Missouri River. The lake was formed by the installation of the Holter Dam. Log Gulch has fish-cleaning areas in its listed amenities. Walleye and trout are in the lake for anglers to catch. However, the large number of pleasure boaters present throughout the summer months make fishing more difficult then. Water skiing is a popular activity at Holter Lake.

Fewer than 50 miles to the west of Log Gulch Recreation Site, you will find the Bitterroot Mountains. These mountains are home to some of the most impressive climbing routes in Montana. The Montana Alps can be found between the Lolo and Lost Trail Passes — these are the tallest peaks in the mountains. The Bitterroot Mountains offer different options for climbers, including scrambling and sports climbing.

The area of Montana that includes Log Gulch Recreation Site is home to a wide variety of wildlife. The wildlife on view includes ducks, herons, and osprey. Many RVers will see mountain lions, black bears, and moose.

The Bureau of Land Management campgrounds at Log Gulch Recreation Site is equipped with plenty of picnic tables and shelters. Each of the 75 campsites has its own picnic table and firepit. There are also two shelters where you can picnic. They are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Log Gulch Recreation Site is equipped to handle RVs at 73 of its 75 campgrounds. The sites don't have hookups, but potable water and firepits are available. In each of the BLM RV camping sites, you can pitch a tent beside an RV. 

If you're looking RV camping with hookups, the best option is to base yourself in Wolf Creek. This settlement has several private RV campgrounds, including 7 R Guest Ranch. The ranch includes a bar and family-friendly veranda viewing area for wildlife enthusiasts. Other options include the Prewett Creek RV Park, which includes all the amenities an RV driver could wish for during an RV camping trip.

Bureau of Land Management free camping is available at Log Gulch Recreation Site. BLM lands usually allow you to camp for free, away from developed campsites. While the developed campgrounds at Log Gulch cost $15 per night, free primitive and dispersed camping is available near the trails on BLM lands. Log Gulch Recreation Site is open throughout the year. Its campgrounds are available on a first-come-first-served basis, so it can be challenging to snag a paid campsite there during the warmer months. However, Wolf Creek is a short drive from the Log Gulch Recreation Site; you can get groceries and other supplies there throughout the year. The winter months can bring harsh conditions with snow and ice. In the warmer months, mosquitoes can be a problem.

Setting out from Helena, take I-15 north towards Great Falls. Turn right at exit 226, which has a sign for Wolf Creek. Then turn left onto Recreation Road. After crossing a bridge, turn right onto Beartooth Road and continue for 7.5 miles to Log Gulch Recreation Site.
