Glendive OHV Area (SRMA)


The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

The Glendive OHV Area is located to the west of Montana's Badlands. The city of Glendive can be found to the north of the OHV area, which is classified for limited use. Glendive is a good base for RV drivers exploring Montana's Badlands. Central Montana is filled with beautiful locations to explore, with Lewis and Clark National Forest to the west. Yellowstone National Park is located to the southwest, around 100 miles from Glendive. Locals and visitors make their way to the Glendive OHV Area to enjoy off-road driving along designated trails. Mountain biking and hiking are popular activities because of multiple trails crisscrossing the OHV Area.

Bureau of Land Management campgrounds are easy to find in the area around Glendive OHV Area. The BLM controls the 2,800 acres of the Glendive OHV Area. Traditional paid campsites and Bureau of Land Management free camping are available at sites around the US.

Diane Gabriel Trail

A short drive from Glendive OHV Area is Diane Gabriel Trail. The main attraction of the trail is the dinosaur fossil that takes around 30 minutes to complete. Despite being less than one mile in length, the trail includes some difficult moments. Rattlesnakes can be an issue on the trail, which can feel secluded on quiet days.

Gunners Ridge Trail to Hungry Joe Overlook

A long trail taking more than two hours to complete, Gunner Ridge Trail to Hungry Joe Overlook provides hikers with stunning views. The elevation gain of more than 500 feet adds to the difficulty level and provides links to other trails. The trail takes hikers toward the badlands from Glendive and takes in a walk along a ridge for more than a mile.

Fishing and BoatingFishing and Boating

Despite being located beside Montana's Badlands, Glendive is known as the US capital of paddlefish and caviar. There are fishing opportunities available along the Yellowstone River, with trout a popular target for fly anglers. The Yellowstone River provides plenty of opportunities for boating and kayaking throughout the warmer months.

ClimbingClimbing

The best climbing opportunities in the Glendive area are found in the Badlands region. Climbing is difficult around Badland Butte, which stands 2,687 feet high. Makoshika State Park is located 30 miles from Glendive and provides excellent scrambling routes. The soil and gravel around each climb can be unstable and make climbing dangerous in the area.

There are plenty of animals to view around the Glendive OHV Area, including turkey vultures and the American kestrel. Mule deer are often seen in the area, with mountain lions known to inhabit this part of Montana.

Picnicking

There are no designated picnic areas at Glendive OHV Area, although trails and unexplored areas do offer beautiful views across Glendive. A short drive to Makoshika State Park will provide plenty of picnic tables and shelters.

Off-Road Vehicles

There are plenty of roads and trails for drivers of off-road vehicles to explore. All vehicles must carry a license plate or have been inspected for safety. All motorized vehicles must remain on the designated trails.

Fossil Hunting

The Badlands and the area around Glendive are important for fossil hunters. Dinosaur fossils are visible in Makoshika State Park and along trails around Glendive.

There are no RV amenities at the Glendive OHV Area. Instead, the city of Glendive provides excellent RV camping opportunities. The Glendive Campground is located close to the OHV Area and offers all the amenities an RV driver could want. Shower facilities, a dump station, and Wi-Fi make this a modern campsite to enjoy. Makoshika State Park offers RV camping in limited numbers, with a small nightly fee payable.

The Glendive OHV Area is located along the Lewis and Clark National Trail. The area around Glendive is filled with trails and campgrounds. BLM camping is available within the borders of the Glendive OHV Area. Dispersed and primitive camping are available on Bureau of Land Management grounds without charge. The amenities we associate with modern camping are not available when you take part in dispersed and primitive options. Camping is done on trails away from BLM campgrounds to return campers to nature.

You will find the Glendive OHV Area 7 miles south of Glendive. Take N. Merrill Avenue from the downtown area and remain on the road as it turns into Marsh Rd. The OHV Area has a single small sign marking its entrance around 7 miles along Marsh Rd.
