Fishing and Boating
Boating, fishing, and whitewater rafting are all permitted on the Merced River. You'll find exceptional rafting opportunities between Yosemite River and Lake McClure. Anglers of all skill levels have no problem catching brown trout, largemouth bass, wild rainbow trout, and spotted bass. Boating is most popular up on Lake McClure near Coulterville.
Climbing
Yosemite National Park is one of the greatest climbing areas in the world. Try your hand at sustained crack climbing or plan a multi-day excursion up the walls of Yosemite Valley. Those staying overnight during their big wall climbs must have a wilderness climbing permit. Minimize your impact on the canyon walls and flora by practicing safe climbing habits.
Wildlife Viewing
The wooded wilderness around McCabe Flat Campground is full of red foxes, opossums, mule deer, bighorn sheep, ground squirrels, and marmots. Significant local birds include gray owls, grouse, ducks, woodpeckers, and kingbirds. While it's important to keep an eye out for black bears and mountain lions, encounters with these large predators are uncommon.
Picnicking
You'll find plenty of trash cans, picnic tables, and fire grills at McCabe Flat Campground. This site is one of the only organized picnicking areas on the Merced Wild and Scenic River for several miles. You're welcome to picnic anywhere on California BLM lands unless otherwise designated. Make sure to practice the Leave No Trace principles when visiting and pack out all of your waste.
ATVing
Bring an off-roading vehicle to maximize your BLM adventure near the Merced River. These vehicles allow you to haul extra supplies like food, water, and camping essentials so you're better prepared. You’ll also be able to see and do more during the day, maximizing your exploration potential.
