Cedar Point is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the United States. You’ll find Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio on Lake Erie’s shore. It is the home of 18 roller coasters, including Steel Vengeance, which opened in 2018 as the fastest, tallest, largest hybrid roller coaster.

Lake Erie’s southern shore grew into a popular tourist in the late 19th century. The Cedar Point peninsula, which was named for the many cedar trees, was well-known for its fishing. By the 1880s, the area was increasing in popularity with bathhouses, picnic grounds, and wooden walkways.

Cedar Point officially became a public resort when a group of landowners and investors constructed the Grand Pavilion. This structure has two stories with a theater and concert hall and still stands today.

By 1892, Cedar Point opened its first ride. The toboggan ride launched people into the lake. The following year, The Switchback Railway opened as the park’s first roller coaster. It stood at a whopping 25 feet and went 10 miles per hour. While guests once had to ride a steamboat to access the park, they can now drive right up and enjoy the 70 rides, 18 roller coasters, sandy beach, and water park.

How to Get There

The nearest airport is Cleveland (CLE) Airport. It’s 44.2 miles away in Cleveland, OH. To get to Cedar Point from CLE, you can take a shuttle by Jayride, rent a car, or take the bus.
