The state park is named after Myles Standish, an English military officer and advisor who accompanied the Pilgrims on the Mayflower and was critical to the defense of Plymouth Colony in 1620. Consisting mainly of scrub oak and pitch pine trees, the destination is part of a system of rare coniferous forests called the Atlantic coastal pine barrens ecoregion.
