When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the first line to his epic poem "Evangeline," he pictured Nova Scotia's wilds. "This is the forest primeval" rings across the centuries as a call to preserve the vision European colonists found in the Americas. Though the location is different and the forest's trees are of another species, this line describes Sam Houston Jones State Park quite well. Located at the Houston and Calcasieu rivers' confluence as they drift into the Indian Bayou, the park is an excellent example of what the original explorers discovered here. Abundant wildlife flourishes in the 1,087-acre park, with up to 200 species of birds visiting yearly. Sam Houston Jones State Park Campground offers 62 spacious RV campsites with picnic tables. The park provides a dump station so that guests can clean their waste tanks. Whispering Meadow RV Park
Whispering Meadow RV Park, only four miles northwest of Sam Houston Jones State Park, offers 89 RV campsites. Of those sites, 47 are pull-thru with concrete pads, 17 are back-ins with concrete pads, and 25 are back-ins with crushed stone pads. The park supplies a dump station so that visitors can clean their waste tanks at arrival and when leaving. At a central location in the 10-acre park, a large building houses the restrooms and hot showers. Two laundry facilities sit at each end of the RV camping area. Guests receive a free 48-channel cable TV feed.

Hidden Ponds RV Park
Hidden Ponds RV Park sits 12 miles west of Sam Houston Jones State Park. The park features 159 RV campsites, 104 of which are pull-thru sites with concrete pads capable of handling rigs up to 65 feet in length. The remainder is a mix of concrete and graveled back-in sites that can handle rigs up to 40 feet in length. Each site comes with a picnic table and a fire ring. Warm showers and restrooms with flush toilets are available. A laundry facility with a wash and fold option operates on the park grounds. There are seven acres of well-stocked fishing ponds and trails that wander throughout the park. A dump station is available for visitors who need to empty their waste tanks. Each campsite at Hidden Ponds has access to cable TV.

How to Get to
Sam Houston Jones State Park
Lake Charles, a city of some size, is only 10 miles away. To get to Sam Houston Jones State Park from Lake Charles, take Interstate 10 West for two miles to exit 27. Turn right to merge onto Louisiana Highway 378 North. Follow LA-378 N for five miles. Turn left onto Sam Houston Jones Parkway, and travel for one mile. Turn left onto Sutherland Road for less than a half-mile; then, turn right onto Sam Houston Jones State Park Road. The park entrance is one-half mile ahead.
Lafayette, LA, is over 80 miles east of the park. To approach Sam Houston State Park from Lafayette, take I-10 W for 70 miles into Lake Charles, and then, follow the instructions above.
