Sam Houston Jones State Park RV & Campground Guide

Louisiana

When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the first line to his epic poem "Evangeline," he pictured Nova Scotia's wilds. "This is the forest primeval" rings across the centuries as a call to preserve the vision European colonists found in the Americas. Though the location is different and the forest's trees are of another species, this line describes Sam Houston Jones State Park quite well. Located at the Houston and Calcasieu rivers' confluence as they drift into the Indian Bayou, the park is an excellent example of what the original explorers discovered here. Abundant wildlife flourishes in the 1,087-acre park, with up to 200 species of birds visiting yearly. Visitors flock to the park from nearby Lake Charles, LA, and citizens as far as Lafayette claim it as their own.
