George Wyth State Park was officially dedicated as Josh Higgins Parkway in 1940. It wasn't until 1956 that this wooded multi-use area got its current name. Today, the state park is popular with campers because of its 69-site campground and with hikers because of its more than 11 miles of trails. Some of those trails connect to the larger 80-mile trail maintained by Waterloo and Cedar Falls, which is close by. You'll also find multiple lakes for fishing and boating, including George Wyth Lake and Brinker Lake. George Wyth State Park is a National Urban Wildlife Sanctuary too.

George Wyth State Park
Inside George Wyth State Park
George Wyth State Park has more than three miles of paved trails that are suitable for walkers and those on bikes or skates. It has a bed and breakfast for those who want a break from camping and a concession stand that is open during the warmer season. Boating and fishing are some of the activities that you can do in the nearby river and on multiple lakes such as the 40-acre Fisher Lake. It is also home to the Cedar Valley Paddlers Trail, which covers 10 miles across four lakes.

George Wyth State Park
George Wyth State Park has a convenient location just south of U.S. Route 218. If you follow Route 218 north or south, you can follow the signs that go through town as the road winds its way around until it runs east and west. The park has several signs along the road that point you to the campground and some of the lakes.

George Wyth State Park is home to a large campground with 131 total campsites, 62 of which are designated RV sites. The majority of the RV sites only have electrical hookups, but several have water hookups as well.
You'll find great opportunities for wildlife viewing and bird-watching at the park. Some of the area's many species include beavers, white-tailed deer, raccoons, groundhogs, northern leopard frogs, painted turtles, Cooper's hawks, Canada geese, and green herons.
Dogs of all sizes are allowed at George Wyth State Park for no additional fee. However, they need to stay leashed and attended at all times, and they aren't permitted on beaches or in buildings.
