Lake Kegonsa State Park is located in central Wisconsin. The lake is part of the Yahara Chain of Lakes, along with nearby Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. The area was created by the glaciers that covered Wisconsin 12,000 to 15,000 years ago. Today you’ll find prairie lands, marshes, and forests within the park’s 342 acres, as well as the 3,200-acre Lake Kegonsa. Visitors can enjoy the park all year long with special activities unique to each season. This includes cross-country skiing in the winter and views of the stunning fall foliage each autumn.

Lake Kegonsa State Park Family Campground
The Lake Kegonsa State Park family campground is located inside the state park. It has 96 sites, 29 of which have electrical hookups. The sites are partially or fully wooded. All of them can accommodate RVs. The campground has flush toilets, showers, and a dumping station. Water is available. The beach and boat launch are less than 1 mile away.
Badgerland Campground
Badgerland Campground is located just outside of Stoughton, WI. Water and electrical hookups are available, and there are some pull-through sites. The campground has a spring-fed swimming pool, a stocked fishing pond, a playground, a basketball court, and an on-site bar. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash. Rates start at $49 per night.
Blackhawk Camping Resort
Blackhawk Camping Resort is located on Clear Lake outside of Milton, WI. Electrical and water hookups are available. The campground offers fishing, a swimming pool, restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, a playground, and a store. There are also walking paths, kayak rentals, activities for kids, a beach, a bar and restaurant, basketball, and volleyball.
Creekview RV Park
Creekview RV Park is near I-90 outside of Edgerton, WI. It has 23 RV sites, 14 of which are creekside. All sites have water and electrical hookups. There is a dumping station, a spring-fed pond, and an adjacent golf course. The campground is partially wooded.

Lake Kegonsa State Park
You’ll enjoy exploring the park with over five miles of hiking trails open to the public. You can also take a boat out on the water for a relaxing afternoon or a day of fishing. Hunters will appreciate the large variety of game that call Lake Kegonsa State Park home.
With more than 60 species of birds and 20 species of mammals within Lake Kegonsa State Park, you'll love nature watching. In winter, the hiking trails turn into cross-country skiing courses, and ice fishing is allowed on the lake.
Inside Lake Kegonsa State Park
Lake Kegonsa State Park offers a variety of recreation for all seasons. In spring and summer, you can camp there and make use of the picnic areas, a swimming beach, and the boat launch. Sailing and motorboating are permitted, and there is great fishing in the lake. In fall, enjoy the beautiful scenery as the trees change color. In winter, you can go cross country skiing and sledding.
Fishing
Fishing is a popular sport on Lake Kegonsa with a wide variety of species available. Common catches include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, musky, walleye, and catfish. State residents and nonresidents 16 and older must have a current Wisconsin State Fishing License.
Geocaching
Geocaching is a wonderful scavenger hunt game that visitors to Lake Kegonsa State Park can play while visiting. Search for the park’s cache along the White Oak Nature Trail while enjoying the many beautiful features of the park.

Lake Kegonsa State Park offers everything from prairies to lush forests. You’ll also find marsh areas and sandy beaches within the park’s boundaries.
Stargazing
Stargazers will find clear skies over Lake Kegonsa that are ideal for viewing the Milky Way and more. The University of Wisconsin Astronomy Department hosts regular public stargazing events at the park, offering visitors the opportunity to look for the moon, constellations, and more.
Flora and Fauna
You’ll find a variety of small animals within Lake Kegonsa State Park. These include cottontail rabbits, muskrats, chipmunks, red foxes, opossums, and gophers. There are also deer roaming throughout the area. Bird watchers will love spotting horned larks, sparrows, bobolinks, ducks, and pheasants.
Hiking
There are five miles of hiking trails in Lake Kegonsa State Park. They range in length from the 0.1-mile Wetland Boardwalk Trail with a wildlife viewing platform to the 1.3-mile accessible Prairie Trail. The 0.5-mile Lakeshore Trail follows the shoreline between the beach and boat launch. People of all ages enjoy the 0.3-mile Bluebird Trail, which is a grass-covered pathway through the woods and picnic area.
Boating
While motorized boats are not allowed on Lake Kegonsa, you can enjoy a kayak trip along the shore. This is also the perfect place for a canoe ride. The boat launch makes boating here convenient, and the lake is large enough that it rarely feels crowded.
Swimming
Lake Kegonsa State Park has a swimming beach that includes a concession stand and equipment rentals but has no lifeguards on duty. Visitors can enjoy the nearby picnic area.
How to Get to
Lake Kegonsa State Park
When coming from Madison, take Highway 12/18 East. Take a right onto County Highway AB, followed by a left onto County Highway MN. Turn right onto Door Creek Road, which leads into the park.
Entering Lake Kegonsa State Park
There are two main parking lots. One is located at the trailheads, and the other is near the day-use shelter. Entry fees for Wisconsin residents are $8 per vehicle. Out-of-state visitors must pay an $11 fee.

Sixty-eight of the park's campsites can be reserved ahead of your visit. There’s a reservation fee of $7.95 in addition to the nightly camping fee of $30. Reservations can be made through Lake Kegonsa State Park‘s website.
Pets are welcome in Lake Kegonsa State Park, but they must be kept on a leash and under control at all times. They’re allowed on most roads and hiking trails within the park, but you cannot take your pets into any of the buildings, playgrounds, beaches, or designated picnic areas.
