Belle Isle State Park is an 892-acre park that encompasses seven miles of shoreline on the Rappahannock River near the town of Somers in Virginia. Three types of ecosystems are found at the park, including wetlands, forest lands, and farmlands, and the park often hosts educational programs centered on these diverse environments. This park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 since it was a working plantation dating back to 1692. Glebe Point Campground
Glebe Point Campground features 16 wooded acres along the Great Wicomico River and 97 campsites that accommodate RVs of all sizes. There are various activities to do at this pet-friendly campground, like fishing, playing miniature golf, and swimming in the pool. The campground has 30-amp power with no water or sewer hookups. A boat launch and a dock are available for all campers who bring their boats along. The location of the campground allows easy one-day trips to Richmond, Williamsburg, and Fredericksburg.
Little River Campground
Little River Campground is situated on the Little Wicomico River just minutes from the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. The campground has 134 waterfront and inland campsites with each lot having water, sewer, and electrical hookups. Restaurants, shops, and other local attractions are just a short distance from the campground. Pets are welcome!
Naylor's Beach Campground
Naylor's Beach Campground offers spectacular views of the Rappahannock River and is conveniently located off Route 360 in Warsaw, Virginia. All sites are first-come, first-served, with each one having water and electrical hookups. This pet-friendly campground also provides a dump station, hot showers, and bathroom facilities for campers. The campground offers boating, picnicking, swimming, and plenty of relaxation opportunities. The area just outside the campground includes museums, restaurants, shopping, wineries, and historical sites.
What to Do at
Belle Isle State Park
Belle Isle State Park is home to nearly 10 miles of multi-use gravel trails, and these trails are popular with birdwatchers who want to spot local songbirds, bald eagles, and waterfowl. This park also has a fishing pier on a saltwater bank, and there is an additional boat launch area for both motorboats and non-motorized boats. The boat launch includes an ADA-accessible ramp, and there are canoes, kayaks, and bikes available to rent for four hours at a time at the state park’s camp store. Additionally, Belle Isle has bridle paths for equestrians.
Inside Belle Isle State Park
The inside of Belle Isle offers three picnic shelters, providing plenty of space for special family gatherings. The state park has 10 miles of trails, most of which are gravel, making them ideal for hiking and biking. These areas are perfect for birdwatching, wildlife observation, and taking in the beautiful greenery and woodlands. There are guided canoe trips offered during the summertime at the park; canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are obtainable for rent at the camp office. Other popular activities to do inside the park are fishing, boating, and horseback riding.
Fishing
Visitors can go saltwater fishing on the park's marked fishing pier, near the boat launch area, or on the banks of the Rappahannock River throughout the park. Fish that anglers frequently catch include smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, striped bass, white bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, American shad, and yellow perch.
Geocaching
Public visitors to Belle Isle State Park frequently leave geocaches for future visitors to catch. Additionally, the state park staff sometimes host geocaching events for visitors to find items hidden along trails that relate to the park’s many bird species.
Nature Watching
Belle Isle State Park has been named a top birding spot by Reserve America, and there are over 150 species of birds for visitors to spot at the park. Additionally, animals such as white-tailed deer, turkeys, rabbits, and squirrels are frequently seen along the park’s trails and in the recreation fields.
Hiking
This state park offers almost 10 miles of gravel trails for hiking, and all are designated as easy when it comes to difficulty. The White Oak Swamp Loop trail can be accessed from the state park’s campground, and the boating and fishing area can be accessed from the Deep Creek Trail.
Boating
Belle Isle’s boat launch area is accessible by the hiking trails or with a vehicle, and it features a ramp for unloading kayaks and canoes from car tops. Canoes and kayaks are also available to rent at the park for $10 an hour or for $30 for four hours.
Biking
All of the trails at Belle Isle are usable for bikes, and there are bikes available to rent for $5 an hour or for $15 for four hours.
How to Get to
Belle Isle State Park
Belle Isle State Park is located about an hour and a half away from the city of Richmond, Virginia. To reach the park from Richmond, take US-360 East for 51 miles to Warsaw. From there, turn right onto VA-3 East, drive 14.5 miles, and then turn right onto VA-354 South. Continue for three miles before turning right onto Belle Isle Road, then continue on to the state park entrance.
Entering Belle Isle State Park
A parking fee is required to enter the state park, and it may be paid at the entrance station. If the station is unstaffed, you can self-pay online before entering by cash or check or with a credit card by following the instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Belle Isle State Park
The best time to visit Belle Isle is during the camping season, which is from the first Friday of March to the first Monday of December. During this season, the camp store will also be open, and rentals for boats and bikes will be available.
The location that this state park sits on includes both forests and wetlands, so diverse wildlife is abundant. The most commonly spotted animals in the park include blue herons, osprey, hawks, bald eagles, deer, reptiles, and amphibians.
There are 28 campsites at the Belle Isle State Park Campground that are available for RVs to use. These sites come with water and electrical hookups, and they are open for camping from March to December.
Campers are encouraged to reserve a spot at the Belle Isle State Park Campground in advance online. The cost to reserve a campsite is $35 a night for Virginia residents and $40 for non-residents. All campers must also pay the standard $5 park entrance fee one time upon entering the park.
Pets are allowed at this state park and in its campground so long as they are on a leash of at least six feet at all times while outside. Horses and horse trailers are also permitted in marked areas and on marked horse trails.
