Monahans Sandhills State Park near Monahans, Texas, is a fantastic place to go sand sledding, ride your horse across the sand, or go camping. The state of Texas does not actually own the land for this park in Ward and Winkler counties, but rather, it leases and manages 3,000 acres from the Sealy-Smith Foundation. The park includes a lease of an additional 800 acres from the Williams family of Monahans and 300 acres from Ward County. Be forewarned that this park can get very hot in the summer, but spring and fall are terrific times to visit when temperatures are more moderate. Winds, usually from the southeast in the summer and the northwest in the winter, create constantly changing dune shapes. While visiting, you can find many things to do in the surrounding Permian Basin area, including learning about the history of the oil industry at the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, watching a show at the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center, and hiking at the I-20 Wildlife Preserve.

Monahans Sandhill State Park
During your visit, you can rent a sand disc at the park's office to go sledding on the dunes at Monahans Sandhills State Park. You can also make use of the hiking trails across the sand, and those needing a little help can borrow a beach wheelchair from the park's headquarters at no cost. Stop at the park's office to see the exhibits to learn more about the area's history. The wildlife viewing area attached to the center is a terrific spot to see animals and desert plants. The park also offers an 800-acre equestrian area to explore the desert environment.
Inside Monahans Sandhill State Park
Head to the visitors' center to cool off and watch the wildlife through the large windows of the building. Then, head back outside to slide down the sand dunes. You can also go hiking anywhere that you want in this park because there are no designated trails. Bring your horses and go for long trail rides in the equestrian area. This park is conveniently located very near Interstate 20 and a great place to spend a day or two relaxing. However, be forewarned that the afternoon temperatures can get hot, so it's important to drink plenty of water.

The nature center attached to the park's headquarters is a fantastic place to go nature watching. You can often see badgers, wood rats, kangaroo rats, javelinas, feral hogs, and Jerusalem crickets. Animals can survive in this area because the dunes sit atop an underground water source. In low-lying places, the water often seeps up through the sand, allowing animals to get a drink.

Monahans Sandhills State Park is a fantastic place to go stargazing because of its remote location, which provides clear skies free from light pollution. Grab a blanket and lie back on the ground, or set up a telescope at a picnic table to see the stars above you. The constellations you see will vary throughout the year, so bring a guidebook.

While no hiking trails exist at Monahans State Park, guests are welcome to hike on the dunes. Remember that this location can get very hot in the summer, so bring lots of water. The recommendation is one gallon of water per party member per day. In addition, keep track of your surroundings to find your way back to your starting point. The open spaces at the park are a great place to practice your navigation skills with a compass.

Parking for vehicles of all sizes is available near the pay station at the park's east end. Parking is also available near the park's picnic areas. People under the age of 13 can enter this park for free. Those aged 13 and over must pay a $4 entrance fee.
