Beverly Beach State Park is about seven miles north of Newport, OR, and the main attraction is the miles of ocean beach extending from Yaquina Head to Otter Rock. If you visit during the spring or winter, you can watch migrating gray whales on their way to or back from Baja, California. The park is also an excellent place to picnic during a day trip, and a playground is nearby for kids. Alternatively, outdoor enthusiasts can explore the park's forest on its trail. Nearby, the town of Newport offers charter boats, and its historic waterfront has restaurants, shopping, art galleries, and a maritime museum. What to Do at
Beverly Beach State Park
The park provides easy access to miles of sandy beach along the Pacific Ocean coastline. Here, you can explore the tide pools, surf, or beach comb, and it is flat and wide, making it a popular spot to play frisbee or fly kites. If you plan to stay overnight, the campground is situated along Spencer Creek, and many sites offer ocean views. On the other hand, during a day visit, you can pack a lunch and eat in the park's picnic area, which is in a grassy spot sheltered from the wind by large trees.
Inside Beverly Beach State Park
There’s plenty to keep you occupied along this special stretch of beach. Here are some of the most popular activities inside the state park.
Hiking and biking are great ways to see the park, both on its forested trails and along its sandy oceanside expanses. Follow a walkway from the campground under the highway for direct beach access -- you’ll even have a view of the Yaquina Head lighthouse.
Playgrounds are installed to keep the kids happy and help mom and dad rest easy once bedtime comes.
Fishing is a popular way to pass the time -- and snag some free dinner to cook up on the grill while you’re at it. Be sure you have all necessary Oregon licensure.
Surfing is another opportunity to get a first-hand experience of the ocean, though you’ll want to bring a wetsuit -- the northern Pacific is cold!
Fishing
Fishing along the surf is excellent at the park, and anglers can catch rockfish, lingcod, herring, and surfperch from the shore. The best time for fishing in Spencer Creek is in the winter months when salmon and steelhead travel up the stream from the ocean. You can angle for brown and brook trout in the creek year-round.
Hiking
The park's 1.5-mile Spencer Creek Loop Trail is popular for people looking for a short hike or walking laps. The views of the Pacific Ocean, especially at sunset, are stunning from the trail's high points, so don't forget to take some photos. The route starts at the welcome center, winds through tall trees, follows a stream, and has a section close to the ocean before you return to where you began.
Stargazing
The picnic area is a great place to set up your telescope, or you can bring a blanket and set up on the beach to enjoy the park's clear night skies. Astronomy buffs may want to plan their trip for August when the Perseid Meteor Shower takes place.
Flora and Fauna
Aside from the whales, sea otters, and other ocean life you can spot from the coast, most wildlife viewing in Beverly Beach State Park centers around birds. The Audubon Society lists more than 100 species that live in and around Beverly Beach State Park, but the most common you will see include gulls, plovers, grebes, Pacific loons, surfbirds, and the spotted sandpiper. For avid birders, the Audubon Society provides checklists for the area and asks that if you spot any birds that are not on the list, you report the sightings. You will see a variety of flora when you visit the park. Along Spencer Creek, ferns, skunk cabbage, and other freshwater plants are abundant. While hiking, you will be shaded by hemlock and spruce trees. Closer to the ocean, you will see California huckleberry and various species of swordferns.
Geocaching
You can participate in geocaching at all the Oregon state parks along the ocean. The Beverly Beach State Park geocache concerns fossils and rocks, and you're supposed to photograph yourself with what you find.
Swimming
While you can swim at the beach, you should be aware that the water is cold and only rises to slightly above 50 degrees in the summer. However, it can be refreshing on a hot day, and many people choose to wade in to cool off.

The weather is remarkably consistent throughout the year at Beverly Beach State Park, so any season is an excellent time to visit. However, for your best chance to see the migrating whales, you should plan your trip for the spring or early winter.
Near the ocean, you may spot sea otters and various aquatic life in the tide pools. Birders may spot several species of surfbirds, gulls, and sandpipers to add to their journals.
The campground at Beverly Beach State Park has more than 250 sites. Fifty-seven feature full hookups, and 76 spots have electrical and water hookups. Each camping spot has a fire ring, picnic table, and restrooms nearby.
You do not have to reserve a spot to overnight in the park. However, if you want a full hookup site, the park recommends you make a reservation in advance. Note that there is an $8 reservation fee.
Yes, your four-legged family members are welcome at Beverly Beach State Park. They are allowed in the campground and on the beach and trails. However, they must be on a leash, and you are expected to clean up after them.
