Algonac State Park is a 1,550-acre park in Marine City, Michigan, where you can watch freighters pass by on the St. Clair River. You can visit the on-site shooting range to practice archery, handguns, rifles, and hand traps. Rare habitats at the park include oak savannas and lake plain prairies. Algonac State Park is also by the Michigan–Canada border. The iconic Bridge to Bay Trail, a 50-mile trail, travels through Algonac State Park. It has beautiful views of the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, and Lake Huron.

Riverview Campground Marina
Riverview Campground Marina is one of many great options when it comes to RV parks in the Algonac area. Packed with great amenities for you to enjoy, the spot is located four miles south of the state park. Due to its central location near the state park, you can enjoy beautiful views that are difficult to capture elsewhere. Riverview Campground Marina provides its patrons with internet, water, and electricity, and management even allows pets to stay. The standard rate on a night at this RV park is $30.
Seaway Trailer Court
Seaway Trailer Court is another great campground option right on the St. Claire River. Algonac State Park is within walking distance, so you can enjoy a relaxing stroll up to the park as opposed to relying on a vehicle to start your day. In fact, this campground in Clay is less than a mile south of the state park.

Algonac State Park
You can go boating, fishing, hunting, and picnicking at Algonac State Park. Biking is allowed on some trails as well. In the winter, you can ski on designated trails for a unique experience on snow and ice-covered oak savannas and lake-plain prairies. Snowshoeing is another way of enjoying the enchanting winter terrain at the park. Some people like to go metal detecting at Algonac State Park, too.

Inside Algonac State Park
When you arrive at Algonac State Park, you will be impressed by the rare oak savannas and riverfront views. During winter, the park offers visitors recreational options such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. You can participate in more traditional park activities like hiking and picnicking when the warmer temperatures arrive. One of the most popular leisure activities at Algonac State Park is to hang by the water and spot river freighters. Whatever you find yourself in the mood for, you are unlikely to get bored at Algonac State Park.
Fishing
Types of fish you can catch at the park include bass, carp, catfish, and walleye. You can buy bait at a nearby tackle and bait shop.
Nature Watching
There are 22 species of threatened, endangered, and special-concern wildlife at Algonac State Park. Wildlife viewing opportunities include grassland birds, butterflies, and deer. You may also spot the rare eastern fox snake or spotted turtle.
Stargazing
Because of the great lakes that surround Michigan, it's a beautiful place for stargazing. You have a chance to see the northern lights and meteor showers. October, November, and April give you the best opportunity to catch the northern lights. Two notable meteor showers that are viewable in Michigan are Delta Acuariid and Perseid. Delta Acuariid peaks from July 28 to July 30. Perseid takes place on August 11 and August 12.
Flora and Fauna
Purple milkweed, a rare plant, grows in Algonac State Park. Wildflowers, sunflowers, coreopsis, and prairie grasses are other common plants in the park.
Hiking
Two trails that you'll want to hike to appreciate the rare terrain at Algonac State Park fully are Blazing Star Prairie Trail and Oak Savanna Trail. Blazing Star Prairie Trail, a 0.5-mile interpretive trail, features pink wildflowers, sunflowers, coreopsis flowers, and prairie grasses. Oak Savanna Trail travels 2.4 miles through the oak savanna. In the winter, you can ski the trail as long as you stay on the path. Because the shooting range is nearby, you may want to plan your hike for the morning when it's quieter.
Boating
There is a boat launch at Algonac State Park. Only paddle boating is allowed on the St. Clair River.
Swimming
You can go for a swim in the St. Clair River. Just remember to be aware of freighters that travel along the river. Dogs, however, aren't allowed to go in the water. You may also want to keep kids out of the river for safety.
Biking
You can go on a bike ride on Bridge to Bay Trail. The section that runs through Algonac State Park is 5 miles long.
How to Get to
Algonac State Park
Algonac State Park is at 8732 River Road, Marine City, MI, 48039. From Marine City, travel southwest on South Main Street toward Jefferson Street, and continue onto South Belle River Avenue. Turn right onto Chartier Road and left onto M-29 S/S Parker Street/S River Road. Within 3.8 miles of being on M-29 S/S Parker Street/S River Road, you'll reach the state park. It will be on the right-hand side.
The buses M-29 North from 23 Mile & Gratiot and M-29 South from Port Huron offer stops at Algonac State Park. They only operate on weekdays.
Entering Algonac State Park
You need a Michigan Recreation Passport to enter the state park in any motorized vehicle, including motorcycles and mopeds. For non-residents, a recreation passport is $39 for a year's access and $11 for one day. If you tow a vehicle, you must buy the annual pass and pay an extra $8. You can buy a Michigan Recreation Passport from Michigan's government website.
For residents, a recreation passport is $13 if you buy it at the time of your license plate registration/renewal and $18 otherwise. The passport is valid for one year. A two-year option is $26 if you acquire it when registering/renewing your license plate. Passports for motorcycles and mopeds are $7 or $12, depending on whether they're bought with registration/renewal. Resident passports can't be purchased online. You must pay by cash or check at the state park or a Department of Natural Resources customer service center.

Summer is the best season for visiting Algonac State Park because the weather is warm, and you can see meteor showers. Spring and early fall are also beautiful seasons to visit.
You can find butterflies, grassland birds, deer, spotted turtles, and eastern fox snakes in Algonac State Park. Spotted turtles have black to bluish-black shells and yellow spots. They're an endangered species, so be extra careful to avoid hurting them.
