The High Falls State Park is located northwest of Macon in Georgia and covers an area of 1,050 acres. The park contains the largest waterfall in middle Georgia, as well as a 650-acre lake, making it one of the nation’s top family fishing destinations. The park also has an interesting history, as it was once a prosperous industrial town (known as High Falls) which then became a ghost town in the 1880s when it was bypassed by a major railroad. Among its serene landscape, you may also spot several species of wildlife, including squirrels, raccoons, beavers, deer, armadillos, woodpeckers, and foxes.

Georgia is known to be a hot and humid state, and the weather in High Falls State Park is no different. In summer, visitors can expect an average high temperature of 92°F during the day, with temperatures falling to 66°F during the night. Winter is much milder, however, reaching a top of 57°F.

While High Falls State Park is popular due to its camping, it’s also a widely-visited region due to the number of fun recreational activities on offer. With its tumbling cascades, large lake, and ghost town history, it’s certainly a place that the whole family will enjoy.

Hiking : There are several hiking trails with various levels of difficulties in the state park. These will take you past stunning sights, including waterfalls, lush forest, the Old Powerhouse, and the sparkling lake. View the trail maphere.

Swimming : Swimming in the lake and river in the park is not allowed, but a large pool is available for visitors wishing to take a refreshing dip during the warmer months. A small entry fee applies.

Boating : There are boat ramps within the park, allowing visitors to launch their boat or vessel. Canoe, kayak, and paddleboat rentals are also available. Boating is a popular activity within the park, as the lake is not only picturesque, but very calm too.

Fishing :  High Falls Lake is rated as one of the best largemouth bass-fishing lakes in the state. You’ll also find catfish, crappie, and bream here, so be sure to try your luck with a fishing rod!

Mini golf : Children and adults alike will love the 18-hole miniature golf course located within the park. It’s a great way to spend your afternoon if you’re after something less strenuous than hiking!

How to Get to
High Falls State Park

From Atlanta, High Falls State Park is a 50-mile drive. Get on I-75 S/I-85 S from Memorial Dr SE, Washington St SW and Pulliam St SW. Follow I-75 S to Highfalls Park Rd in Lamar County. Take exit 198 from I-75 S, then drive to High Falls Rd in Monroe County.

If driving from Macon, get on I-16 W from Spring St and follow I-75 N to High Falls Rd/Rte 36 in Monroe County. Take exit 198 from I-75 N, then turn right onto High Falls Rd/Rte 36.

The park gates are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. There is a $5 day-use parking fee or visitors can buy a $50 annualParkPass to use in High Falls State Park and other parks within Georgia.
