In the northwestern corner of Alabama, there's is a tiny little town called Rogersville, with only one traffic light. Take the highway east to Madison and Huntsville for an abundance of shopping and nightlife fun. Alternatively, travel about half an hour west to the Shoals area where you can explore famous historical locations and so much more in Florence and Muscle Shoals. But tucked in the heart of this city is Joe Wheeler State Park. North Alabama weather is fairly mild, save the humid heat of late summer.

Riverview RV Campground
Riverview RV Campground is a family-oriented and pet-friendly place right on the beautiful Tennessee River, on the western border of Limestone County. They offer 70 RV sites with full water, electric, and sewage hookups. There are several great features available here as well, including a storm shelter, boat launch, covered pavilion, playground, on-site laundromat, and restroom with showers. They do not allow pop-up campers or anything older than a 2001 model. Rates start at $45 a night.
McFarland Park
On the shores of the Singing Tennessee River, bordering the edges of Downtown Florence, AL, is the large and fun-filled McFarland Park. There are activities for everyone at this updated but historic site. Soccer and baseball fields, a driving range, multiple playgrounds, paved and lighted jogging trails lining the riverside, fishing piers, and covered shelters with tables and fireplaces are just a few of the features available to RV campers. They also offer Wi-Fi, showers, and laundry facilities. Pets are welcome but must remain on leashes in the park. For $25 per night, RVs can enjoy full hookups included with each of the 60 sites and all amenities listed above.
Colbert Alloys Park
Colbert Alloys Park is one of the most feature-filled RV parks in North Alabama. There are 28 sites with full hookups, right on Wilson Lake in Muscle Shoals, AL, with access to the lake via boat ramp and pier. Two floating fishing piers, adult swings, playground and sandbox, picnic areas with grills, hiking trails, 105 stair step climb, heated bathhouse, a storm shelter, and a covered and lighted pavilion with a fireplace, picnic tables, restrooms, and electric outlets are several of the available features here. There are no weekly rates; the nightly rate is $20, and monthly is $250. Utilities are included.
Heritage Acres
Located in Tuscumbia, AL, is another fun-filled and amenity-rich RV Park. Heritage Acres has an on-site RV supply and accessories store, as well as restrooms with showers and a laundromat. For entertainment, they offer a game room, playgrounds, and a wet playground. They also offer four different types of RV sites, including 57 back-in sites, four standard pull-in sites, 10 deluxe pull-in sites and eight premium pull-in sites.
All sites include full hookups, Wi-Fi, and 48 television channels. Deluxe and premium sites include a picnic table and fire ring. Premium sites feature an additional bistro table and are on a cement pad. Daily rates range from $35.13 for back-in sites to $53.15 for a premium site. Weekly rates are between $196.73 for back-ins and $292.25 for premium. Monthly rates start at $440 with cash and $455 with a card for back-in sites and end at $573 with cash and $588 with a card for deluxe sites. Monthly stays are not available for premium sites.

Often called a bass fisher's paradise, Joe Wheeler State Park offers many places to cast out, the most popular being the marina on the docks and rocks along the parking lot attached to it. "The General" golf course and disc golf area are fun for golfers and golf enthusiasts while the miles of hiking trails and the lake tours are a beautiful scenic adventure for nature lovers. A river beach for swimming and boat rentals are available too. Plus, there are many day-use areas with grills, fireplaces, picnic tables, and electrical outlets under covered pavilions. There are more than 100 campsites with full hookups available at a nightly rate of $30 or a weekly rate of $125.
How to Get to
Joe Wheeler State Park
From Natchez Trace Parkway, exit onto US Highway 72, going toward Cherokee. Follow Highway 72 for about 25 miles and when you reach the split, make the slight left to remain on Alternate Highway 72 for another 11 miles. Turn left onto Alabama Highway 101, and stay on it for about 12 miles. Take a right onto US Highway 72 East. Continue for about 5 miles, and you'll see the large wooden sign for Joe Wheeler on the right. Turn right into the park.
From Interstate 65, take Exit 351 in Athens, AL. Exit onto US Highway 72 and head west. Follow Highway 72 for about 21 miles, and turn left into the park when you see the big wooden sign for Joe Wheeler State Park.
