Orange Park is a town in Clay County with a population of 8,412. It’s also a suburb of Jacksonville. The town’s name is derived from the expectations of its founders. They wanted to create a fruit-growing industry in the area. Unfortunately, the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 destroyed their crops, which never came back.
Orange Park was founded in 1877 by the Florida Winter House and Improvement Foundation. This foundation purchased several thousands of acres after the Civil War to create a southern retreat and farming community. The land they bought was divided into lots which helped lay out the street system you see in Orange Park today. Kingsley Avenue and Plainfield Avenue are examples of these original streets. A special act of the Florida legislature incorporated the town in 1879. By 1880, well-known people such as Phillip Sheridan and Ulysses S. Grant were among the visitors to the area. A large hotel with a 1,200-foot pier was built on Kingsley Avenue in expectation of tourists.
Today, Orange Park continues to be a tourist destination with several things to do nearby. Black Creek trail is ideal for walking, biking, or jogging, and Clarke House Park includes nature trails, a lake, and many gardens. The park’s on-site 1900s home serves as the Orange County Historical Society’s meeting place. Golfers will enjoy Eagle Harbor Golf Club and Eagle Landing Golf Club. Be sure to visit Orange Park Farmer’s and Art Market every first and third Sunday from September through June for homegrown produce, honey, and pastries, along with homemade jewelry and soaps. Adults will have fun at the Bestbet Orange Park casino, and kids will love the Jumperz Fun Center and Orange Park Skateboard Park.
