In the late 18th century, several Creek tribes occupied the area around Eufaula on either side of the Chattahoochee River. Settlers began moving into the area in the early 19th century in search of fertile agricultural farms and built settlements near the river. They adopted the name "Eufaula" from one of the Creek tribes.
General William Irwin, a veteran who fought in the War of 1812, owned large parcels of land in the region. He established a steamboat business that led to the development of Eufaula as a trading hub. Within a few years, Eufaula became an important trading and transportation center for various counties in Alabama and Georgia. The town was renamed "Irwinton" in honor of the general but was changed back to Eufaula in 1843.
