Demopolis was founded in the early 1800s after the fall of Napoleon's empire. It received its name from a group of French expatriates who were a mix of exiled Bonapartists and other French refugees who had settled in the United States after enslaved workers overthrew the colonial government in Saint-Domingue.

Demopolis developed into a regional commercial hub in the 1830s, attracting American and European merchants and artisans. Numerous plantation owners also established townhouses in the community and its outskirts. By 1860, the population within the town had grown to approximately 1,200 people. The town then became a center of attraction for exciting activities like music and drama performances, concert artists, circuses, and carnivals.

The growing, trading, and milling of cotton remained a significant basis of the economy until World War I. After the end of cotton production, beef cattle farming, and aquaculture, the city embraced agricultural pursuits. Industries became sources of employment by the mid-century, with cement, lumber, and paper industries playing a prominent role in the city's economy into the 21st century.

Today, Demopolis is the largest city in Marengo County in west-central Alabama. It is a significant cultural and historical hub with plenty of notable historic structures such as the Rooster Hall and the Federal-style Bluff Hall.
