Present-day Cross City was home to the Blackfeet, Crows, and Sioux for many years before the arrival of colonists and settlers in the late 19th century. It was initially known as Crossroads because it was where two significant trade paths crossed each other. In 1912, the area changed its name to Cross City, following the establishment of Dixie County from Lafayette County. 

Cross City started thriving in the early 1920s when Putman Lumber Company established a town called "Shamrock" nearby. The company built an enormous sawmill and constructed a community around it to house employees. A full-service store, an ice house, and other amenities soon popped up in the community. The prospering lumbar industry in Shamrock led to immense economic and population growth in Cross City.
