Galveston, Texas is an island, resort-style city that offers plenty of things to do and experience. European settlements in Galveston began in 1816. Following the Congress of Mexico’s independence from the country of Spain, the Port of Galveston was established in 1825. The area was officially named after a viceroy and colonial governor, Count Bernardo Vicente de Gálvez y Madrid.

The Port of Galveston became the main transport center during the 1846 Texas Revolution. During the 19th century, Galveston became the largest port in the nation but was humbled by the devastation of the Galveston Hurricane that began in late August of 1900. Despite this deadly weather event that killed more than 8,400 residents, the city survived and became vibrant once again during the Era of Prohibition between 1920 and 1933. 

Today, Galveston has more than five historic districts, and this includes more than 55 structures that are on the National Register of Historic Places. The city’s modern economy still relies on the shipping industry. However, the Galveston economy also consists of the financial industry and the medical industry, and a significant portion of the area’s economy relies on tourism.
