Congaree National Park

Congaree National Park sits less than an hour from Columbia, which is the capital of South Carolina. Technically, this is the first national park you’d hit if you don't take a detour to Everglades National Park, which is about 40 miles south of Miami. This place is especially great for hikers who like varying terrains. While exploring the park, you’ll experience gravel, paved areas, and even hilly portions that will test your endurance. It’s important to remember that Congaree has a tendency to get a bit humid, so bring lots of water and dress appropriately.

Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park is a Virginian national park that's known for its cascading waterfalls. The wildlife is also very diverse here, so bring your camera to catch some in their natural environments. Keep in mind that the Appalachian Trail runs through this park if you would like to explore it. In fact, about 105 miles of it are located in the park.

St. Sebastian River State Park

This Florida state park is famous for its grassy plains and wetland areas. Throughout the state park, you’ll be able to experience longleaf pines and maples, and you’ll almost certainly be witness to a wide variety of native animal species. This is also a hiking-friendly place with miles of foot trails to use. St. Sebastian is a prime location for migratory birds, so bring your binoculars and cameras with you when you visit.

Jekyll Island State Park

Located in Georgia, Jekyll Island is a prime example of a state park that has a little something for the entire family. At the state park, there’s marshland, beaches, and forestland. Kids can learn in the marshy areas since they're teeming with life, and the whole family can play and relax along the beachfront portions of the park. Fun fact: Jekyll Island was used as a shooting location for a wide variety of films.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park

You’ll find Smith Mountain Lake in Huddleston, VA, and it’s one of the Virginia state parks that are actually hunter friendly for at least part of the year. During those prescheduled times, no other visitor is allowed in the park. Outside of these deer hunts, there are boating, hiking, and fishing opportunities aplenty throughout the park.

The site of the museum is a national landmark and was the location where nonviolent sit-ins occurred in 1960.

Greensboro Science Center

Jacksonville, FL
