Depending on the route you choose, driving from Seattle to Las Vegas will take you between about 16 and 17 hours — and along the way, you’ll cover more than 1,100 miles of some of the most remote desert our country has to offer. What makes the route work is the fact that it’s bookended by two stunning metropolitan cities filled with urban adventures of all sorts, from dining to museums to entertainment. This route allows you to juxtapose big nights out with truly otherworldly scenery and some of the darkest skies you’ll find in the northern hemisphere.
Why Is This Route Popular?
As you make your way through Washington, you’ll have the opportunity to check destinations like North Cascades National Park and Mount Rainier off your to-travel-to list. Then, in eastern Oregon, you can enjoy the small mountain town of Joseph and the nearby Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, including a stellar camping option at Wallowa Lake State Park. (Just be sure to reserve early, especially in the summertime!) It’s a quick drive to the viewpoint overlooking Hells Canyon, and then you’ll cut through Idaho and have the opportunity to explore (or camp in) Boise National Forest. Finally, you’ll round out the trip by cutting through Nevada. There are several different ways to do it, but no matter which you choose, you’ll find yourself deep in the desert and truly in the middle of nowhere — in the best way. Taking an RV rental means you’ll be comfortable the entire time, able to relax in the same bed each night and cook your own meals. And making it a one-way trip means you get to invest the full trip into exploring this incredible route and making every stop count, rather than budgeting for the return trip. (Plus, there are many wonderful one-way rental RVs in Seattle to choose from.)
