Clara Barton Parkway

Clara Barton Parkway gets its name from one of the most honored American women in history, Clarissa "Clara" Harlowe Barton. The self-taught nurse is famous for doing humanitarian work, advocating for civil rights, and founding the American Red Cross. You can find the early history of the American Red Cross preserved at the Clara Barton National Historic Site along the parkway. Before renaming the Maryland section of the route, Clara Barton Parkway's former name was the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Aside from honoring the historic humanitarian, renaming the street also helped travelers avoid confusion when addressing Virginia's portion of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
