Essential Packing Tips for Your First RV Rental

By Maddi Bourgerie
How To Guides and Hacks

Learning how to pack properly for an RV trip takes trial and error. It took me a handful of trips to make a comprehensive list. With more than 20 RV rentals under my belt, I know the essentials needed for a successful RV trip, and I am sharing them with you to so you can avoid classic rookie mistakes. As you prepare, packing efficiently and thoughtfully can enhance your experience and ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable getaway. Here are some essential packing tips to help you make the most of your RV excursion.

First, Check Your RV Listing for Amenities.

Before you start packing, review the amenities provided in your RV rental. Different RVs offer varying levels of amenities, so it’s essential to know what’s included to avoid overpacking. Some RVs may have kitchen essentials, bedding, outdoor chairs, and even entertainment options like board games. If you’re unsure about what’s available, don’t hesitate to reach out to the RV owner for clarification. Knowing what they provide or don’t will help you start packing.

Things to consider:

  • Pack for Outdoor Comfort: Even though an RV is an upgrade from sleeping in a tent, it is still camping. Since you’ll likely spend a significant amount of time outdoors, pack items that will enhance your comfort and enjoyment. Bring folding chairs for lounging around the campfire, marshmallow roasters for delicious s’mores, and cozy blankets or jackets for cooler evenings. Don’t forget to pack insect repellent and sunscreen to protect yourself from pesky bugs and harmful UV rays.
  • Prepare for Camping Meals: Cooking in your RV can be a delightful part of the experience, allowing you to savor delicious meals while surrounded by nature. Make sure you have essential kitchen tools and utensils, such as a wine opener, cutting board, knives, pots, and pans. Don’t forget to pack drinkware, including cups, mugs, and wine glasses, so you can enjoy your favorite beverages in style.
  • Stock Up on Supplies: Before hitting the road, stock up on groceries and supplies to ensure you have everything you need for your trip. Consider meal planning to minimize food waste and make cooking easier during your getaway. Don’t forget essentials like water, snacks, and ingredients for your favorite campfire recipes.
  • Pack Light and Efficiently: While it’s tempting to bring along everything but the kitchen sink, remember that space in an RV is limited. Pack only the essentials and items you know you’ll use to avoid clutter and maximize storage space. Opt for multi-purpose items whenever possible to minimize the number of things you need to bring.
  • Stay Organized: Keep your RV tidy and organized by using storage containers, bins, and collapsible storage solutions. Labeling containers can help you quickly find what you need and keep everything in its place throughout your trip.
