Toilets aren’t exactly the most exciting RV upgrade. They’re one of those things you don’t think about until something starts going wrong. Kind of like replacing tires or buying a new sewer hose. Necessary? Absolutely. Exciting? Not at all. This is our real experience with the Dometic 310 Gravity Flush Toilet Review.
But after almost four years of full-time RV living, replacing our stock toilet has been one of the best upgrades we’ve made. Our old plastic toilet wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great either. The bowl seal slowly leaked, so it never held water for long. If you’ve used an RV toilet before, you know having water in the bowl makes a very big difference. The plastic was also nearly impossible to keep looking clean, and no matter how much I scrubbed, stains and smells seemed to stick around.
We lived with it for years simply because it still worked. Then we found a good deal on the Dometic 310 Gravity Flush Toilet, decided to give it a try, and I honestly can’t believe we waited as long as we did.

Installation Was Easier Than We Expected
If replacing an RV toilet sounds intimidating, I promise it’s much easier than it seems.
Installation was straightforward and only took a short amount of time. It’s essentially disconnecting the water line, removing two bolts from your old toilet, replacing the seal, and installing the new one. If you’re comfortable tackling basic RV maintenance projects, this is definitely something most people can do themselves.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about throwing away your old RV toilet and immediately upgrading to something that actually feels like it belongs in a home.
A Better Flush and Easier Cleanup
This has probably been the biggest difference for us. Our old toilet slowly lost water from the bowl, which meant black tank odors could occasionally make their way into the bathroom. It also only had a few small streams of water when we flushed, so it never did a great job rinsing the bowl. Things were often left behind, which meant more scrubbing than I’d like to admit.
The Dometic 310 has been the complete opposite. It actually holds water in the bowl, and the flush does a much better job rinsing everything clean. Our old toilet only had a couple of concentrated streams of water, while the Dometic uses 14 water streams around the rim to rinse nearly the entire bowl with each flush. We’ve noticed little to no residue left behind, and the ceramic bowl wipes clean with very little effort compared to the old plastic one. Again, not the most glamorous thing to talk about, but if you’ve ever tried scrubbing stains out of a plastic RV toilet bowl, you know exactly why this upgrade is worth mentioning. The Slow-Close Lid Is Amazing
I honestly didn’t realize how much I’d love the slow-close lid until we had one.
Our old plastic toilet had a flimsy plastic seat that always felt a little wobbly, and if someone let it slam shut (which the kids somehow managed to do all the time), it was incredibly loud. The seat on the Dometic 310 feels much sturdier, and the slow-close lid means no more accidental slamming or being startled awake in the middle of the night.
It’s such a small feature, but once you have it, it’s surprisingly hard to give up.
Our Only Complaints
I really only have two minor complaints, and neither one would stop me from buying this toilet again.
The first is the toilet seat itself. The ceramic bowl feels incredibly high-end, but I do wish the seat matched it. The slow-close feature is fantastic, and the seat feels much sturdier than the flimsy plastic one our stock toilet came with. That said, it’s made from an enameled wood/composite material rather than ceramic. It still feels well made, but I do wonder how it will hold up over the years. Unlike the ceramic bowl, it doesn’t have that same easy-to-clean surface, so I could see it eventually holding onto stains or odors and needing to be replaced down the road.
My second complaint is the exposed hinge area where the seat attaches to the toilet. Dust, hair, and other debris tend to collect around the mounting hardware, and because there’s no cover over it, it’s a little awkward to clean. Since our cat’s litter box is in the bathroom, litter also has a habit of finding its way into those little crevices, making that area even more difficult to keep clean. It’s a small annoyance, but I’d love to see Dometic add a simple cover there in a future version to keep debris from collecting.
Neither of these is a deal breaker. They’re minor nitpicks on an otherwise excellent toilet, and after using the Dometic 310 full-time, I’d still buy it again without hesitation.

Is It Worth the Price?
The Dometic 310 typically sells for around $250–$350, depending on the retailer, although we were lucky enough to find ours on sale. While it’s definitely more expensive than a basic plastic RV toilet, in our opinion it’s absolutely worth it.
This is one of those upgrades you’ll use every single day. When you live in a small space, comfort matters. Easy cleaning matters. And not having lingering odors matters.
We’ve spent money on plenty of fun RV upgrades over the years, but this is one that quietly makes everyday life better.
Final Thoughts
After living with the Dometic 310, I can honestly say it’s one of the most worthwhile upgrades. The better flush, ceramic bowl, and slow-close seat have all made a noticeable difference in our daily life. If you’re still using the basic plastic toilet that came with your RV, this is an upgrade I don’t think you’ll regret. Sometimes the best RV upgrades are simply the ones that make life on the road a little easier…and a little less smelly.
Note: Since installing our Dometic 310, Dometic has introduced the newer 410 Series. While the 410 offers some updated features, many retailers still carry the 310, making it a great option if you find one at a good price.
