North Fork Owyhee Wild and Scenic River

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is a government entity dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of national parks throughout the country. BLM sites almost always accommodate RVs minus one or two exceptions not applicable to this location.

There are numerous BLM sites in Oregon thanks to the diverse geography that includes the ocean, beaches, lakes, forests, mountains, and, to a smaller extent, open prairies and farmland.

You will find North Fork Owyhee Wild and Scenic River in the southeastern part of the Beaver State, near the Idaho border. The park spans both states, with roughly 9.5 miles managed by Oregon authorities and 5.5 miles managed by Idaho authorities.

The breathtaking landscape incorporates open terrain peppered with unique rock formations, valleys, and, of course, the river. This park is ideal for a peaceful yet challenging hike. However, if you want to pick up the pace, advanced kayakers will enjoy the harsh river waters and the exciting kayaking conditions they provide, even in the early season.

Fishing and BoatingFishing and Boating

As the name suggests, this portion of the Owyhee River is particularly wild. Beginners beware, but expert kayakers come to this location specifically for the advanced kayaking conditions.

Start the 18 ft. Owyhee River advanture at the North Fork Campground. You will experience relatively mild Class II-III rapids before encountering the less controlled Class III-IV rapids. While it may seem simple enough on paper, only experts should attempt the trip. Inexperienced kayakers may injure themselves if they get caught up in the rapids.

You can fish in the river or the nearby Owyhee Lake, but the harsh waters don't create the most ideal fishing conditions.

Wildlife ViewingWildlife Viewing

Thanks to the large area and large quantity of hiding spots, you may not realize the scope of wildlife that calls the park home. Playful otters glide through the river water in large numbers. Large game and predators commonly found in the area include bighorn sheep, elk, deer, cougars, and bobcats. You may also encounter smaller creatures, such as badgers and raccoons. Numerous birds occupy the area as well. You may also spot some snakes and lizards. This area is known for housing rattlesnakes, so always watch your step.

Leave No Trace Leaf

"Leave No Trace" is a commonly used phrase among nature lovers that reminds visitors to leave the space they encounter in equal or better condition than they found it. A nonprofit organization known as The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics works to spread knowledge about proper behavior in natural settings and clean areas damaged or sullied by human visitors. The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics has established seven principles to guide adventurers on how to behave, including disposing of waste properly, respecting wildlife, and leave what you find, and being considerate of other visitors.
