Planning your Gunsight Wash BLM trip

The area around Gunsight Wash is home to many desert-adapted plants and animals, including rattlesnakes, cacti, and scorpions. Always observe wildlife, whether it's a reptile, mammal, bird, or insect, from a distance; this helps to protect both you and the animals. Do not touch cacti as their needles are barbed and can cause a serious reaction.

Gunsight Wash is relatively remote, so it’s important that you carry any essential supplies with you. The desert can be very hot and dry, and dehydration is a risk even in the colder months. You should always carry plenty of water and take small drinks of water often.

Summers in the desert can be very warm, with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees. The area is more popular in the cooler months of fall, spring, and winter. Temperatures can drop very quickly at night, however, even after the warmest days. Winter nighttime temperatures can dip below freezing, so dress in layers and bring plenty of extra blankets if you’re camping. Leave No Trace Leaf

Practicing Leave No Trace guidelines can help to protect Bureau of Land Management campgrounds and other natural sites. Always be courteous to other campers or visitors to the area. Pack out all of your trash, and if you see any litter at the campground, pick it up and throw it away. Stay on trails as much as possible. Only start campfires when the danger rating is low in a fire ring or pit, and always make sure the embers are cold before you leave.
