Stone Mountain State Park is dominated, unsurprisingly, by a giant granite dome that looms over park visitors as they hike, fish, picnic, and just enjoy their day at the park. You can also see Hutchinson Homestead, a restored mid-19th century mountain farm, or hike the 18 miles of trails that wind through the park.
The weather in the park doesn’t get too hot in summer, with temperatures reaching an average in the mid-80s, but it can get cold in winter when lows can dip into the 20s. It can also be humid so be sure to check the weather before you go!

Inside Stone Mountain State Park
There are lots of things to do at Stone Mountain State Park. From water fun to other outdoor activities, here are some of the things you can do inside the park:
Hiking: The trail network that snakes through the park also heads up to Stone Mountain summit. There are also trails that head by waterfalls, trout streams, to the historic homestead, and to dramatic overlooks with breathtaking vistas.
Fishing: More than 20 miles of park streams are designated trout waters. Rainbow and brown trout are found in the lower parts of the streams while brook trout prefer the higher, cooler waters. There are also two accessible fishing piers located along the East Prong of the Roaring River.
Rock climbing: Climbing is permitted in designated areas on the cliffs of Stone Mountain, though a free permit is required.
How to Get to
Stone Mountain State Park
From 1-77 North: Take Exit #83/Hwy 21 North/Sparta/Roaring Gap. Go north about 13 miles to Traphill Road/state road 1002 and turn left. Go about 4 miles to John P. Frank Parkway and turn right. Follow the parkway to the park, about two miles.
From the west: Take NC 16 to NC 18 in North Wilkesboro and then turn right onto Hwy. 268 east. Go about 3 miles and turn left at Airport Rd. Go about 3 ½ miles and turn left - this becomes Traphill Rd (SR 1002). Follow Traphill Rd. to John P. Frank Parkway about 11 miles and turn left, follow the parkway to the park.
