Long Point State Park RV & Campground Guide

New York

There are three parks called Long Point State Park in the state of New York: one on Lake Ontario, one on Lake Chautauqua, and one on Cayuga Lake. This description is about the one on Cayuga Lake. The park covers 297 acres and at the very tip of the point in the park, there is a small lighthouse to explore. Just the other side of Cayuga Lake, you'll find Watkins Glen, which used to hold the premier Formula One race in the United States. The track was closed in 1980 because of safety concerns, but there is a Grand Prix festival every year during either August or September, and this festival celebrates the town's racing history.

What to Do at
Long Point State Park

You can hunt in the designated areas during some seasons. You can take your boat out into Cayuga Lake, too, and fish either from your boat or on the shore. Hiking trails crisscross the park, and these double as snowshoe or cross-country skiing trails during the winter. There's a playground for your children and plenty of grills so that you can have a barbecue.

Long Point State Park is open from dawn to dusk, and when the park is open, you can visit the ranger station to learn about the area and the natural ecosystems within the park.

Inside Long Point State Park

When visiting this park, you'll be able to explore the lake, which provides gorgeous sunsets. There are 4.5 miles of trails within the park that are pretty easy to maneuver, making them ideal for inexperienced hikers. During the winter, cross-country skiing is permitted on these trails as well as the surrounding roads before they are plowed. The lake makes fishing and boating easy at this park, and since there's a boat-rental area, you don’t even have to worry about bringing your own vessel on your RV trip.

Hiking Hiking

There are 4.5 miles of trails through the park. These are flat, easy hikes that are also good for biking. Before setting out, check the weather report so that you can be prepared if the weather turns bad.

Flora and Fauna

The trees in Long Point State Park include beech, oak, maple, spruce, and poplar. The park is known as a haven for migrating birds. There are many species to see, including redstarts, harriers, and waxwings. During the autumn, owls and kestrels nest in the trees. Out over the water, you can see ducks, loons, scoters, and grebes. Even if you don't see one, you'll hear woodpeckers getting their dinner above you.

Fishing Fishing

Northern pike, gar, landlocked salmon, both common kinds of bass, and even gigantic sturgeon swim the waters of Cayuga Lake. The lake is up to 435 feet deep, so there are many more species of fish than you might think, including such rare catches as alewives. The trout in the lake will respond well to both flies and trolling baits.

Boating

Cayuga Lake is great for boating of all kinds even if you don't fish. Long Point State Park has four boat ramps. Just be sure to be back by the time the park closes. Remember to have your boat cleaned beforehand so that you don't accidentally bring any "aquatic hitchhikers" with you that might cause problems in the lake.

Swimming Swimming

The grass beach is rocky, but there is a marked swimming area with a diving float. During the summer, the water temperature is in the mid-70s. There are lifeguards present during the late spring and summer but not at other times. Without lifeguards, no swimming is permitted.
