Curt Gowdy State Park in Cheyenne, Wyoming consists of low-lying meadows, the foothills of the Laramie Mountains, large granite formations and three reservoirs. Hynds Lodge, a building that's on the National Register of Historic Places, is built into a hillside with granite stone and ashlar masonry. You can reserve the lodge for events as well as stay there. The highest point of elevation in Curt Gowdy State Park is 7,598 feet, offering breathtaking views of the land below. Popular activities at the park include fishing, hiking, biking and boating. Every year, there's also an archery contest as well as other special events.

What to Do at
Curt Gowdy State Park
You're welcome to bring your horse to Curt Gowdy State Park. There is a free horse corral, a large, fenced pasture area, and an equestrian loop. If you like archery, then you'll want to take the two-mile-long archery trail by Granite Springs Reservoir. Curt Gowdy State Park is one of the best mountain biking destinations in Wyoming. Its biking trails maneuver through beautiful and challenging terrain.

Inside Curt Gowdy State Park
If you’re wondering what activities are available within the park, you’re in for a treat. There’s something for every type of visitor – whether it’s fishing, water sports, hunting, or exploring the park’s 35+ miles of hiking, biking, and horse-riding trails. You won’t want to waste your precious time spent at Curt Gowdy, so we’ve rounded-up the state park’s most popular activities below.
Fishing : The three reservoirs offer vastly different fishing opportunities. Granite offers excellent rainbow trout and kokanee salmon fishing. Crystal has shoreline fishing for brown trout, rainbow trout and kokanee salmon. North Crow Reservoir is the only one in the area in which one can catch a splake, rainbow trout, brown trout, and grayling — all in the same day. Ice fishing in all three reservoirs is also popular during the colder months.
Water sports : Boating is available on Granite Reservoir as well as Crystal Reservoir (15 horsepower limit), while non-motorized boating (kayaks, canoes, paddle boats) is available at North Crow Reservoir.
Hunting : Archery hunting with a permit is allowed in season, however hunting with a firearm is prohibited in the park.
Trails : Visitors have access to over 35 miles of trails within the state park, designed for use by hikers, cyclists, and horse riders. In winter, the snow-covered trails are also excellent for cross-country skiing. Curt Gowdy Kate’s Trail is a 1-mile, ADA accessible concrete trail starting and finishing at the Visitor Center. Other popular trails include the El Alto and Slabz! Trails, which provide incredible views. Plus, don’t miss the waterfall at the west end of Crow Creek Trail.
Fishing
Cast a line for kokanee salmon and rainbow trout at Granite Springs Reservoir. Crystal Reservoir, a smaller lake, also has kokanee salmon, rainbow trout and brown trout. Fishing is allowed at North Crow Reservoir, too, but you should come prepared for no amenities. Fish to reward you for your efforts include splake, grayling, brown trout and rainbow trout. Stream fishing is also possible. In the winter, you can go ice fishing for perch in all the lakes.
Nature Watching
Yellow-bellied marmots, chipmunks, ground squirrels, elk and mule deer are common wildlife sightings. Curt Gowdy State Park attracts birders, especially in April and May when migrating birds pass through the park. There are bluebird houses to encourage summer dwelling. Common bird sightings at the park include nutcrackers, hummingbirds and pygmy nuthatches.
Stargazing
With a high elevation and clear, dark night skies, Curt Gowdy State Park is an excellent place for stargazing. The night sky is great almost anywhere in the park, especially at Crystal Reservoir.
Flora and Fauna
The main flora at Curt Gowdy State Park are ponderosa pine forest, mixed-grass prairie and water birch. Other flora to keep an eye out for include elegant cinquefoil, golden smoke, White River coral drops, early bluetop fleabane and Rocky Mountain iris.
Hiking
Crow Creek Trail to Hidden Falls, a moderate 3.6-mile out-and-back hike, follows Crow Creek upstream to a waterfall. Stone Temple Circuit is a 3.6-mile loop trail that passes over large sections of boulders. Ascend to the highest point in the park by hiking El Alto Trail. It's a 0.9-mile point-to-point trail. Curt Gowdy's Kate Trail is an ADA-accessible trail with beautiful views of the park.
Boating
Boating with up to 15 horsepower is allowed in Crystal Reservoir and Granite Reservoir, and nonmotorized boating is permitted in North Crow Reservoir. In the winter, you can go ice sailing.
Biking
Explore the 35 miles of mountain biking trails between Crystal Reservoir and Granite Springs Reservoir. There are mountain biking skill areas and four play areas at the park.
How to Get to
Curt Gowdy State Park
Cheyenne and Laramie are the closest major cities to Curt Gowdy State Park, which is located at 1264 Granite Springs Road, Cheyenne, WY 82009. From Cheyenne, travel on WY-210 W/Happy Jack Road for about 23 miles. Turn left onto Granite Springs Road, and you'll reach your destination within 0.4 miles. There will be a parking lot here. Other parking areas at Curt Gowdy State Park include Aspen Grove Parking Area and Volin Parking Area.
