Boysen State Park spreads across 35,000 acres along the eastern boundary of the Wind River Reservation, a home shared by the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho. Since 1956, this public recreation area has showcased the lake created when a dam was constructed to block the Wind River. Located in the middle of Wyoming, the park sits in a semi-arid climate with mild summers and frigid winters. The Wyoming Division of State Parks and Historic Sites has developed 13 campgrounds around the water to provide plenty of opportunities to overnight around the water. The reservoir dominates this State Park, making it a must-visit destination for water enthusiasts, especially anglers looking to hook trout or walleye. Boysen State Park also offers plenty of things to do on land, so you should find plenty to keep you busy for the day, overnight, or on a multi-day stay. What to Do at
Boysen State Park
If you like water, Boysen State Park provides plenty of enjoyable amenities, including a swimming beach, boat docks, boat ramps, and a marina. Outside of water sports, this facility caters to the needs of campers with 13 campsites that provide enough space for guests while keeping them isolated enough to experience some solitude. The amenities will keep the whole family enjoying themselves and include several playgrounds, volleyball courts, picnic areas, and even a convenience store at the marina during the summer. With lots of space between developed areas, there is plenty of opportunity to explore the outdoors and see wildlife or to find a bank and fish.

Love the water? Then Boysen State Park is the ideal park for you! Whether you want to take in the beautiful surroundings of Wyoming’s largest State Park, or enjoy some fun in the sun and take to the water, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. Here are some of the different options:
Water Activities – Boysen State Park is a water-centric park with 76 miles of shoreline, so there is no shortage of water activities to enjoy! The park has one designated swimming beach, located at the Brannon Campground. Boating is permitted on the reservoir and there are several boat docks and ramps located throughout the park. Water sports, including water skiing, are popular on the reservoir.
Fishing is one of the most popular water activities at Boysen, as it’s well-known for being a great spot to catch walleye and trout. Anglers can also try to snag sauger, perch, crappie, ling, rainbow, cutthroat and brown trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, stonecat, black bullhead, mountain whitefish, lake and brook trout and splake. Winter ice fishing is also available. A fishing license is required.
Wildlife Viewing – Wildlife is abundant through the entire state park, and it’s common to be able to view many of them in their natural habitat. Some of the wildlife includes deer, antelope, waterfowl, small game animals, reptile, game birds and Big Horn Sheep.
Fishing
Boysen Reservoir is the major attraction at the park, and many visit here to enjoy the quality fishing it offers. Several game fish species are catchable here, including black bullhead catfish, bluegill, trout, crappie, largemouth bass, ling, mountain whitefish, perch, and walleye. You can catch trophy-sized fish from land or a boat.
Geocaching
If you enjoy scavenger hunts, it is worth noting that Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites, & Trails permits geocaching at Boysen State Park. You can search online geocaching organizations for a complete list. These sites often offer clues to help you locate a hidden stash and tell you how to sign the register.
Nature Watching
Boysen State Park is home to more than 100 wildlife species. Birders can flock to the wetlands at the southern end of the reservoir to spot Canadian geese, Caspian terns, Forester's terns, mallard ducks, sandhill cranes, and even endangered whooping cranes. If you seek land-based critters, there are plenty of chances to see antelope, bighorn sheep, coyotes, deer, rabbits, and squirrels within the park boundaries.
Stargazing
When the sun goes down, the stars come out at Boysen State Park with skies that rank as Class 2 on the Bortle Dark-Sky Scale. This rating means that the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies will be visible with the naked eye, and you can make out details of the Milky Way.
Boating
The waters here are usually ice-free from March through December, and you will find boat ramps and docks at the Brannon, Cottonwood, Fremont Bay, Lakeside, and Tough Creek Campgrounds. Additionally, you can enjoy a leisurely cruise across the smooth water or enjoy some jet skiing, tubing, or water skiing. There is also a marina and general store that caters to boaters.
Swimming
If you want to swim in the reservoir, enjoy the dedicated swimming beach at the Brannon Camping area on the north end. There are no lifeguards, but swimmers do not have to worry about motorized boats or other watercraft here because the site is well-marked.
How to Get to
Boysen State Park
From Casper, head north on US Route 20. Boysen State Park and the reservoir are visible west of the roadway. There are park entrances off US Route 20 on the east side, US Route 26 on the south side, and Bass Lake Road on the west side.
Entering Boysen State Park
You will find ample parking near the campsites and other facilities and at pullouts and viewpoints along the shoreline. Please note that there is no vehicle access to the shore on the northwestern portion of the reservoir, as this is part of the Wind River Reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boysen State Park
While Boysen State Park is open year-round when the weather permits, the best times of year to visit are between June and September. The daily highs are usually in the 60 to 80 F range, all of the campsites are open, and all of the roads are usable. Road conditions can decline rapidly at other times of the year.
More than one hundred different species of animals call Boysen State Park home. Many waterfowl, including Canadian geese, mallard ducks, and sandhill cranes live here. You can also spot mammals like bighorn sheep, coyotes, and deer throughout the park.
Wyoming Parks has not designated specific sites for RVs at Boysen State Park or installed hookups. However, most campground sites are large enough to accommodate them, and RVs are welcome at the park.
Camping spots are by reservation only at Boysen State Park. Camping overnight costs $18.25 for Wyoming residents or $32.25 for non-residents.
