Sitting high above the rest of the terrain as the highest point in southern Wisconsin is Blue Mound at 1,719 feet above sea level. This formation allows visitors to see over treetops and enjoy the vast beauty of lush green space, land formations, and even city lights off in the distance. Blue Mound State Park sits on 1,153 acres and gives visitors quality outdoor entertainment through all seasons. Spend the warmer months hiking and biking while enjoying cross-country skiing, a sledding hill, and even winter camping when the snow covers the ground. Blue Mound State Park Campground
Blue Mound State Park has a campground with RV sites. Electrical hookups are available, and two of the sites are handicap accessible. The park has flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a dump station, a picnic table, and a fire ring at each site. Wi-Fi is not available. Pets are allowed if kept on a leash.
Tom's Campground
Tom's Campground offers pull-through RV sites with electrical and water hookups. Each site has a fire ring. Amenities at the campground include showers, flush toilets, a dump station, a snack bar, and free Wi-Fi. RV rates start at $30 per night.
Crystal Lake Campground
Crystal Lake Campground is on the shore of beautiful Crystal Lake and offers a beach for swimming, a swimming pool, kayak and canoe rentals, fishing, and a camp store. RV sites have water and electrical hookups, a picnic table, and a fire pit. Showers, bathhouses, and laundry facilities are available. Rates start at $30 per night.
Fireside Campground
Fireside Campground offers water and electrical hookups, and most of the sites are pull-through and up to 80 feet long. There are also some full hookup sites, but most of those are back-in sites. The campground is dog friendly, offers laundry facilities, and has free Wi-Fi. It has a walking path, a playground, free mini-golf, a basketball court, and more. Nightly rates start at $34.
What to Do at
Blue Mound State Park
Boredom isn't an option when you visit Blue Mound State Park. During the summer months, there's swimming in the heated pool and miles of hiking trails to venture down. In the winter, you can enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on groomed trails. Take a trip to the top of one of the 40-foot observation towers located at the east and west ends of the park, and take in the breathtaking scenery. Check into the campground for stayover trips, and rent one of the 77 wooded sites complete with a fire ring and picnic table.
Inside Blue Mound State Park
Blue Mound State Park is located on top of the highest hill in southern Wisconsin. The park has two 40-foot-tall observation towers that you can climb for a spectacular view of the surrounding area. The park has a swimming pool, and you can go hiking or biking on the trails. You can learn about the park's wildlife and plants from the naturalists' presentations that are held in the evenings in summer. You can also listen to concerts in the amphitheater on several summer Saturdays.

A geocache has been hidden in Blue Mound State Park as part of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association's State Park series.
Nature Watching
While enjoying the beauty of nature at Blue Mound, you're likely to see whitetail deer, turkeys, and other small critters running around. Birdwatching is especially popular here due to the blanket of treetops throughout the park.
Stargazing
Plenty of open areas in the park offer a stunning view of the stars, the moon, and an occasional planet or shooting star away from city lights.
Flora and Fauna
Blue Mound State Park is home to the southern oak savanna biome, an area of low plant density allowing grassland to grow beneath the trees. Red oak, white oak, and shagbark hickory trees fill the park with plentiful shade and wooded area.
Hiking
More than 20 miles of hiking trails run throughout the park. The length of the trails varies and are designed for beginners through more advanced hikers. Flint Rock Nature Trail is a self-guided trail and one of a few that are strictly for hiking during spring, summer, and fall.
Swimming
A 1,950-square-foot swimming pool is open during the summer months along with a splash pad perfect for the kiddos. The pool is the only one you'll find in a Wisconsin state park. It's heated to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and has a depth of 3-4 feet. Bathrooms, showers, and a changing area are available near the pool for convenience. A daily fee or season pass is required.
Biking
Over 15 miles of off-road singletrack trails are carved out around Blue Mound State Park. These trails are open from spring through fall unless the conditions are too wet and are closed during the winter. There is also the Pleasure Valley Bike trail, a 1-mile leisurely trek through forest and open prairie. The park offers access to Military Ridge State Trail, a 40-mile paved biking trail.
How to Get to
Blue Mound State Park
Take Highway 151 S/18 W out of Madison to the west toward the town of Blue Mounds. From there, you'll take Highway ID north to Mounds Park Road. Turn north on Mounds Park Road toward the park.
Entering Blue Mound State Park
There is parking all along the main road throughout the park. There is no fee for entering Blue Mound State Park, but a vehicle admission sticker is required. These stickers can be purchased for a single day or annually through the park office, online, or at a DNR service station.

Every season at Blue Mound State Park has something great to offer. Spring months bring new life into the park, while summer is a flurry of outdoor activity and warmer temperatures. In the fall, the cascade of trees boasts colorful leaves changing colors. Even in winter, you can camp, cross-country ski, and snowshoe through the park.
You're likely to encounter whitetail deer, rabbits, squirrels, and small rodents in the park. Wild turkeys are also plentiful as are dozens of species of birds.
There are 77 RV-accessible camping sites in Blue Mound State Park campground.
Reservations are required for campsites. These reservations may be made the day of your stay or up to 11 months in advance and can be booked online or by phone. You are not allowed to occupy a site until it has been reserved. Campsites range in price from $15-$28.
Pets are welcome at the park but must be kept on a leash no longer than 8 feet and be under control at all times. Pets are not allowed in picnic areas, picnic shelters, buildings, playgrounds, beaches, and certain other marked areas.
