is located in the northern section of the city of Powhatan along a bend in the James River. It is also west of Richmond, so reaching the state park will be fairly straightforward. Powhatan State Park is a great place to start a trip in a canoe down the river. Nearby, there are also vineyards and orchards where you can enjoy exploring the property with your family. Nearby, you can find the cities of Richmond and Columbia.

What to Do at
Powhatan State Park

Inside Powhatan State Park

In Powhatan State Park, there are more than 12 miles of hiking trails and 9 miles of equestrian trails to explore. Coyote Run is a little more than two miles, and it is a great experience for more seasoned hikers. There is also a River Trail, a Gold Dust Trail, and a Turkey Trail that are better for families with kids to hike. You can take a boat along the James River, which connects to the park for 2.5 miles and enjoy some of the best fishing in the area.

Outside Powhatan State Park

Fishing is a big hit along the James River, and of course, you can do it in the park, but the James River covers so much more. In addition to exploring the river, you can also visit the Powhatan Fairground to check out the annual county fair if you are in town when it is. There are also other activities planned throughout the year at the fairgrounds, so check their calendar before you arrive. There are also a few other state parks in the area you can visit, including Pocahontas State Park, Twins Lake State Park, and Bear Creek Lake State Park.

Agecroft Hall and Gardens

Agecroft Hall and Gardens is a gem that is meant to preserve the hall, the artifacts inside, and the surrounding gardens. They hold a Shakespeare Festival at this location every summer. There are also group tours of the property available.

Maggie L Walker National Historic Site

Maggie L Walker's home is preserved to pay tribute to her determination and endurance for civil rights advancement. She fought for African American rights as well as women's rights. She was also the first African American bank president in the country.

Christmas on Wendhurst

Christmas on Wendhurst is a Christmas display that has over 180,000 lights. All of the decorations are homemade. The display starts going up in September of each year, and it stays up until about the beginning of February.

How to Get to
Powhatan State Park

From Richmond: Take I-95 N for about three minutes until you reach I-64 W. Follow I-64 W for about 20 miles, then take exit 167 towards Oilville/Goochland. Turn left onto State Route 617, then turn right onto US-250 W. Turn left on State Route 632, and in 3.5 miles, turn left again onto State Route 634. Continue straight onto US-522 S, and then turn right onto State Route 617. Turn right onto Powhatan State Park Road, and the park entrance will be right in front of you.

Powhatan State Park is open daily from dawn until dusk.

There is also a $4 Equestrian fee to ride a horse in Powhatan State Park.
