Built by Depression-era workers and named for the famous Native American princess who lived in the area, Pocahontas State Park is entrenched in American history, documented in the park’s Civilian Conservation Corps Museum and the Civil War battlefields, museums, and other historical sites in nearby Richmond and Petersburg.
As winter months bring snow and frigid temperatures of 28°F to 50°F, late spring to early fall are the best times of year to visit. Over 64 miles of trails spread throughout the park, offering ample opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Visitors can spend the afternoon playing in any of the park’s three lakes or checking out the swimming pools at the Aquatic Recreation Center. During the summer, the park hosts live performances and other family-friendly entertainment in its outdoor amphitheater.

Pocahontas State Park Campgrounds
To experience the best that Pocahontas State Park has to offer, there’s no better option than to camp in the park itself. The campgrounds have over 110 RV sites, bathhouses with hot showers, a playground, laundromat, and a camp store that sells snacks, firewood, and other supplies. Plus, overnight guests receive free admission to the park’s Aquatic Recreation Center. Large secluded campsites are surrounded by mature trees, making it a serene place to stay for a night or even a couple weeks. Rates start at $40 per night ($35 for Virginia residents).
Pro tip : Reserve your RV spot in advance as they fill up quickly, especially in the summer. Otherwise call ahead or show up at the park to check site availability.

Americamps RV Resort is located north of Richmond and about 35 minutes from Pocahontas State Park. Picture Lake Campground
Picture Lake Campground is a family-owned, quiet campground with scenic lake views located 30 minutes south of Pocahontas State Park. There are 200 RV campsites with water, electric, and sewer hookups and excellent amenities. Visitors can go swimming in Picture Lake or the on-site pool, play a round of corn hole, or stock up on groceries at the camp store. The campground is close to several historical sites, including Petersburg National Battlefield and Fort Lee Military Base, as well as the Virginia Motorsports Park. Rates are $40 per night.

Canoeing, Fishing, and Swimming - If a day on the water suits your fancy, then you’re in luck. Pocahontas State Park has three lakes where you can enjoy a refreshing swim, fish for largemouth bass, explore the waters in a kayak, or simply relax on the beach. On-site rentals include canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and stand-up paddleboards.
Aquatic Recreation Center - Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the recreational center has water-based activities for everyone, including a toddler pool, a fountain wet deck, two leisure pools, an activity pool, and water slides.
Civilian Conservation Corps Museum - Visit the “CCC Museum” to learn more about the Depression-era program that put young unemployed men to work across the country. As part of their efforts, they created over 800 state parks including Pocahontas State Park. Exhibits include artifacts, historic photographs, and personal mementos.
Horseback Riding - Equestrians will delight in the chance to ride through 13 miles of bridle trails. Trail access is available at the Bright Hope Horse Complex, which features ample parking, picnic tables, restrooms, and two exercise rings. Note: this activity is only available for horse owners.
How to Get to
Pocahontas State Park
Pocahontas State Park is located in Chesterfield about 20 miles south of Richmond.
From Richmond, take Interstate 75 S and continue for 12 miles. Take exit 62 for VA-288 N toward Chesterfield / Powhite Parkway. Continue on VA-288 N for 6 miles, then take the VA-10 E / Iron Bridge Road exit toward Chesterfield. After exiting, take a right on VA-604 / Courthouse Road. The park entrance is on your left.

Entering Pocahontas State Park
Admission to Pocahontas State Park is $7 per vehicle on weekdays and $10 on weekends (April to October). The park is open every day from 7am until dusk.

Since many visitors prefer to visit Pocahontas State Park to swim in the lakes and mountain bike or hike on its extensive trail system, summer is the preferred season. Summer temperatures are generally in the 80s. In winter, the daytime temperature is in the 40s and 50s.
Wild turkeys move through Pocahontas State Park in flocks. You will also see white-tailed deer, owls, raccoons, opossums, and striped skunks. Since the park has three lakes, you will also see waterfowl like Canadian geese and ring-necked ducks.
There are 111 campsites for RVs up to 40 feet at Pocahontas State Park. Each site is equipped with electric and water hookups. Most of the campsites have 20- and 30-amp electrical service. Some sites have 50-amp service.
You must use the state’s online reservation site to reserve a campsite at Pocahontas State Park. The camping fee year-round is $35 for Virginia residents and $40 for non-residents.
Like all other Virginia state parks, pets are allowed at Pocahontas State Park, but some restrictions are in place. Dogs are allowed in the camping areas but not in the picnic shelters, activity buildings, or restrooms.
