James River State Park is a public recreation area in Buckingham County, Virginia with a total land area of 1,561 acres. Over 130 acres of the premises are covered by native warm-season grasses, which are regularly maintained to facilitate growth. Not many places grow this type of grass anymore, which gives the state park the appeal of rarity. Moreover, the location preserves a portion of the Kanawha Canal as well as certain parts of the James River. The closest city to the park is Gladstone, and two others you can reach conveniently are Madison Heights and Lynchburg.

The public recreation area has been recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association, which means its starry nights are particularly distinguished and ideal for viewing.

Start the route by heading southeast on E Grace St toward N 8th St. Take VA-76 S and US-60 W to State Rte 605 in Piney Mountain. After continuing on State Rte 605, drive to Green Hill Pond Loop in 5 to arrive at the destination.
