Pedernales Falls State Park offers a wide variety of nature activities, especially water ones! Visitors can take to the river, hike the scenic park and take in wildlife viewing and much more. Here are more details on some of the activities inside the park:
Water Activities – Taking to the river is one of the most popular activities within Pedernales Falls State Park. Visitors can swim on the river (keep in mind swimming and wading in the Pedernales Falls area are not permitted) as well as wade, tube, canoe or kayak. Anglers can also try their hand at catching catfish, bass, sunfish and carp. Keep in mind that the water in the river can become turbulent in a manner of minutes. Keep alert to weather conditions, and leave the area immediately if you notice the water rising or getting muddy.
Trails – Enjoy the natural beauty of the park along the trails, which include 19.8 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, 10 miles of equestrian trails and 14 miles of backpacking trails. Difficulty ranges from easy to challenging, but regardless of which trail you’re on, there are always beautiful scenes to take in!
Keep in mind that the equestrian trail is very rocky with some steep slopes and requires riding experience. Horses should always have shoes.
Nature and Animal Viewing – There are many unique nature sights to take in at Pedernales Falls State Park, including the Pedernales Falls. The best place to view the falls is from the scenic overlook at the north end of the park. From there, you can view the falls of water cascading over tilted, layered steps of limestone, which is 300 million years old!
Wildlife that calls the park home include white-tailed deer, coyotes, rabbits, armadillos, skunks, opossums, raccoons and over 150 species of birds. They can all be viewed in their natural habitat throughout the park.
