Blanco River State Park covers 104.6 acres with shoreline on both sides of the scenic Blanco River. The landscape boasts beautiful pecan and cedar trees on the riverbanks, providing ample shade while you enjoy the park. Established in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Blanco River State Park hosts more than 100,000 visitors yearly. With its location just south of the charming city of Blanco, the state park makes it easy for locals and visitors alike to enjoy river activities without venturing too far from civilization.

What to Do at
Blanco State Park
The spring-fed Blanco River is the central feature of this state park, and many of the popular activities here are centered around the river. Commonly enjoy activities at the park include paddling, tubing, fishing, and swimming. You could spend time picnicking, hiking, geocaching, and viewing wildlife when not enjoying the water. While visiting, you can also join a session with a park staff member to learn more about the history and natural environment of the park, and there's even a junior ranger program for kids.

Fishing
Fishing is popular at Blanco River State Park from the shore or from a boat on the water. The river is stocked with trout regularly throughout the winter. Anglers can also catch sunfish, channel catfish, largemouth bass, and Guadalupe bass. You can borrow rods, reels, and tackle boxes with hooks, sinkers, and bobbers from the park headquarters. In Texas, you do not need to buy a license to fish in state parks.
Geocaching
Several caches are located within Blanco River State Park. After getting the coordinates through the Geocaching app, you can hunt for a cache with your smartphone. Once you find the cache, you can trade a family-friendly item with something in the container and sign the log. If you wish, you can also register what you find on Geocaching.com.
Nature Watching
While the park is relatively small, it is home to ample wildlife. Some animals you may spot include squirrels, armadillos, nutrias, turtles, raccoons, and ducks.
Hiking
The Pumphouse Trail is a short, family-friendly hike that takes you to an overlook with views of the Blanco River. It has interpretive signs along the way that inform you about the local wildlife. Alternatively, the longer Caswell Nature Trail is a rocky path that winds between trees on the banks of the river. During this hike, you can enjoy views of Falls Dam, which the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed in the 1930s.
Boating
At Blanco River State Park, you can use boats with an electric motor or paddle on the water. If you did not bring your own, you can rent single or double kayaks and tubes from the park headquarters. Canoes and stand-up paddleboards are other popular ways to enjoy the water.
Swimming
There are multiple access points to the water throughout the park on both sides of the river. A shallow wading pool is next to Falls Dam for people uncomfortable swimming in deep water and kids.
How to Get to
Blanco State Park
Highway 281 runs from north to south through the center of Blanco, and the highway's bridge crosses over the park's eastern side. If you are traveling to Blanco River State Park from the San Antonio area, take Highway 281 north. Immediately after crossing the river, turn left on Park Road 23. The park headquarters will be on the left. If you are traveling from the Austin area, take Highway 290 west. Then, turn left on Highway 281. Take Highway 281 south through Blanco. Before reaching the Blanco River bridge, turn right on Park Road 23. You will see the park headquarters on the left.

The daily entrance fee for adults is $5. There is no entry fee for children up to 12 years old.

Frequently Asked Questions About Blanco State Park
Given the area's mild winters, camping is popular at the park year-round. Fishing, picnicking, and hiking are popular winter activities. If you plan to enjoy the water activities on the river, such as tubing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming, you should visit during the warmer months from April through September.
Whether hiking along the trails, cooling off in the river, or enjoying other activities in Blanco River State Park, you may spot numerous wildlife species. The river is home to turtles, nutrias, and water snakes. You may see raccoons, squirrels, and armadillos on land.
All 29 of the Blanco River State Park campsites have water and electric hookups, picnic tables, shade shelters, and fire rings with grills. Only eight of the camping spots have sewer hookups, but a dump station is available to all campers.
While reservations are not required, the park recommends them from early spring to late fall during the peak season. There is no separate reservation fee, and campsites are available for $20 to $25 per night.
Pets are welcome throughout Blanco River State Park, except in the buildings and at the wading pool. They must be on a leash, and the park asks that you clean up after your four-legged family members.
