At the bottom of the 6,285-foot Roan Mountain lies the appropriately named Roan Mountain State Park. It’s more than 2,000 acres of hardwood forest and beautiful, rugged ridges. The Doe River snakes its way through the park and is home to a population of trout and other fish. Wildflowers abound, and Roan Mountain is especially picturesque in spring, when azaleas and rhododendron blanket the hillsides.
Weather in the mountains can get pretty cool in winter, with an average low of 21 F in January. It stays mild in summer as well, with an average high at the peak of summertime in the low 80s. The park is fairly rainy, which accounts for the beautiful blooms that can be found there! Roan Mountain gets between 7-12 days of rain each month.

Inside Roan Mountain State Park
There are a number of things to do at Roan Mountain State Park throughout the year.
Swimming: There is a swimming pool at Roan Mountain. The pool features a wading pool for small children, and there are lifeguards on duty.
Hiking: There are 12 miles of hiking trails throughout the park, ranging in difficulty from easy, family-friendly hikes to more strenuous treks to test your mettle.
Biking: There are more than three miles of mountain bike trails throughout the park that also range in difficulty for beginner or more experienced riders.
Fishing: As one of the most productive trout streams in the state, the Doe River is an excellent place for fishing. There are also other wild trout streams nearby, and the Watauga River provides abundant fishing as well.
Interpretive programs: The Miller Farmstead at the park gives visitors a glimpse at the lives of Appalachian settlers.
How to Get to
Roan Mountain State Park
Take I-26 through Johnson City and take Exit 24 (Hwy 67). Follow Hwy 67 through Elizabethton, and turn right onto Hwy 19E south. In Roan Mountain, turn right on Hwy 143 and follow it into the park.
From Boone, NC: Take Hwy 105 to Newland, NC. Take Hwy 194 north out of Newland toward Roan Mountain, TN. At Elk Park, NC, take Hwy 19E to Roan Mountain, TN. In Roan Mountain, turn left on Hwy 143 and follow it into the park.
