French Creek State Park is located in the Hopewell Big Woods, the largest contiguous forest in south-eastern Pennsylvania. The park covers an area measuring 7,526 acres and is home to two lakes: Hopewell Lake and Scotts Run Lake. Visitors also have access to extensive forests, almost 40 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, some mountain biking trails, and the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, which is a cold blast furnace restored to its 1830s appearance. French Creek was chosen as one of the "25 Must-See Pennsylvania State Parks", making it a popular destination for tourists all year round.
The state park is home to a variety of wildlife, including game species such as pheasants, squirrels, turkeys, white-tailed deer, and rabbits, which visitors are permitted to hunt on over 6,000 acres of the park. Other popular activities include camping, hiking, biking, horseback riding, boating, and swimming. The region’s moderately warm weather means the state park is open every day of the year, with temperatures reaching highs of 83°F in summer and lows of 19°F during winter. Inside French Creek State Park
While French Creek State Park is popular due to its camping, it’s also a widely visited region due to the number of fun recreational activities on offer. With almost 40 miles of trails, two lakes, a permanent orienteering course, and an on-site disc golf course, visitors of all ages will be spoilt for choice.
Hiking : With a long list of designated hiking trails available in the park, this is one of the most popular ways to experience the natural beauty that French Creek has to offer. Some of the most popular hiking trails include the Raccoon Trail, Boone Trail, and Buzzards Trail.
Mountain biking : There are 20 miles of trails within the park that also allow mountain biking. They explore most parts of the park and are rated difficult riding due to the rocky terrain. Keep in mind that mountain bikes are prohibited south of Park Road and in Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site.
Horseback riding : Horse-shoe Trail winds through the park and into adjacent lands, giving visitors the chance to partake in horseback riding. Although horses are prohibited on other park trails, the Horse-shoe Trail runs 140 miles from Valley Forge National Historic site to the Appalachian Trail near Harrisburg, offering plenty of opportunities to explore the region.
Fishing : Scotts Run Lake offers excellent trout and other cold-water species fishing, while Hopewell Lake has anglers catching species such as northern pike, chain pickerel, bass, walleye, muskellunge, and panfish. Ice fishing is also available in the colder months.
Swimming : Swimming is offered at the swimming pool by Hopewell Lake, from 11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M., from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day for a small fee. The pool is near the shore of the lake and provides a beautiful setting for swimmers and sunbathers.
Disc golf : There is a disc golf course that winds through the woods by Hopewell Lake, attracting visitors of all ages, year-round. Score cards and maps are also available at the course.
Orienteering : Considered by some as the “Orienteering Capital of North America,” French Creek has developed a permanent self-guiding course for use by visitors of all ages. Maps are available at the park office.
How to Get to
French Creek State Park
You can reach the park from PA 345 south of Birdsboro, north of PA 23, and from the Morgantown exits (1A and 1 B) of the PA Turnpike. Entrances are located on PA 345; south of Birdsboro and north of PA 23.
Entering French Creek State Park
There are no entrance fees or day use fees for any state park in Pennsylvania.
