- Black Moshannon State Park
Black Moshannon State Park occupies 3,480 acres in the central highlands of Pennsylvania. Sitting at an elevation of 1,919 feet and surrounded by the Moshannon Forest, the park is relatively remote. Within the park's confines is Black Moshannon Lake, a 250-acre body of water formed by a dam constructed in the 1930s and was upgraded twice in the intervening decades. Though the lake is fed by clear-water springs, the water is the color of tea. The coloration is due to clear water from springs and streams flowing through the bogs covering most of the lake's shores. While Black Moshannon State Park is near Philipsburg, PA—nine miles west; the park is a favorite of visitors from Pittsburg—128 miles southwest—and Scranton—170 miles northeast.
