Just south of the town of Waynoka, Oklahoma, you’ll find a big surprise in the form of Little Sahara State Park. The 1,600 acres of parkland provide visitors with huge sand dunes that range in height from 25 to 75 feet. The terrain draws in ATV riders and anyone who wants to enjoy the beautiful views. The desert landscape is created from terrace and sorted quartz left behind from the Cimarron River, which flowed through the area more than 11,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Age. Oklahoma’s notorious winds keep the sands shifting so that there’s always something new to see. Special annual events include the Midwest Sandfest at Little Sahara State Park, which includes drag races you can watch or participate in.

Little Sahara State Park Campgrounds
Be the first one to hit the dunes when you stay at one of the three Little Sahara State Park Campgrounds. With a total of 143 tent sites and 86 RV sites, there's plenty of room for your crew to spread out and relax. Each RV site offers electric and water hookups, and you'll find a handy comfort station in each loop. The hot showers are a treat after a day of riding in the sand. During the busy summer season, you can find snacks, fuel, and other supplies inside the park. Prices vary, but you can plan to pay at least $25 for an RV campsite.
Deuces Wild Campground
Looking to relax in luxury after a wild day on the dunes? Head to Deuces Wild Campground, where RV sites with full hookups await. This large, open campground is popular with RVers and ATV riders, creating a fun, lively atmosphere. The dump station and large supply of pull-through sites make it easy to bring your big rig. Hop on the trail to Waynoka across the street; close by, you can access an ATV trail that takes you straight to the state park. RV spots with full hookups start at $35 per night, and the park requires a two-night minimum. If you're staying for a week or month, ask about extended-stay discounts.
Dog Creek Campground
Clean and friendly, Dog Creek Campground is an ideal place to relax between rides at Little Sahara State Park. It's located in Waynoka, so you can get on the park access trail in minutes. Some sites offer electric hookups. Rates vary; call or email the park staff for more information.
Big Bend Park Campground
Enjoy everything Oklahoma has to offer by setting up camp at Big Bend Park Campground. Little Sahara State Park is about 55 miles north, so it's an easy day trip. Return to your campsite and enjoy the views of Canton Lake. When you're done with the dunes, try boating, tubing, and fishing on the lake or play disc golf on land. With electric and water hookups, as well as a dump station, showers, and a playground, this popular campground is a fun family getaway. Sites with electricity are $22-$24 per night.

Inside Little Sahara State Park
Little Sahara State Park is a haven for thrill-seekers. Bring your ATV, side-by-side, or dune buggy, or rent one from one of the nearby outfitters. The wide-open dunes are popular for speedsters and casual riders alike, making the park a fun destination for everyone in your family. After dark, enjoy the spectacular views of the northwest Oklahoma sky from your campsite.
Geocaching
Geocaching is a fun scavenger hunt game that park visitors across the country take part in, including those in Little Sahara State Park. To participate, you’ll need to bring along your favorite GPS device. Geocaching is especially fun in the sandy terrain. The park's cache is typically found near the observation center in a small clear plastic cache that includes items you can take with you if you’d like. Don't forget to bring along small treasures to replace those you take.
Nature Watching
Mule deer, desert whip snakes, and antelope all live in and around Little Sahara State Park. Visitors will also find eight reptile species here, including small lizards. Bird watchers will appreciate the 15 species found in the park.
Stargazing
After the sun sets in Little Sahara State Park, you’ll be able to enjoy the amazing views of Oklahoma’s northeast sky from the campground. The park’s remote location provides dark skies that are ideal for stargazing.
Flora and Fauna
While Little Sahara State Park’s biggest draw is the sand dunes, many visitors are surprised by the many plants that thrive in deep sand, such as sand sage, skunk bush, and sandhill plum. Other flowers and plants found in the park include little bluestem, big sandreed, sand dropseed, Indian blanket, sunflower, golden aster, ragwort, scarlet pea, and yellow evening primrose. Between the sand dunes, groves of American elm, post oak, and blackjack oak trees can be found. Woodlands near the Cimarron River feature cottonwood, elm, hackberry, and soapberry.
Hiking
Hiking is allowed on the dunes at Little Sahara State Park. The shifting sand makes this a great way to get in a good workout while visiting. Hikes to the observation center are rewarded with excellent views of the ATV riders racing over the dunes.
Biking
Several trails and washes surrounding the sand dunes provide mountain bikers with a place to ride and enjoy the natural whoops created by the shifting sand. The large sand dunes can be difficult to navigate, but those with a fat bike can push their bike to the top and slalom down.
How to Get to
Little Sahara State Park
You’ll find Little Sahara State Park on Highway 281 in northwestern Oklahoma. When coming from the south, take Highway 412 to 281. When coming from the north, use Highway 64 and catch Highway 281 in Alva.
Entering Little Sahara State Park
Parking can be found in each of the three campgrounds. The entry fee is $10 for anyone 11 or older. Children who are 10 or under get in for free.

The spring and fall seasons are the best time of year to visit Little Sahara State Park. The weather will be warm enough to enjoy the sand dunes, but you’ll be avoiding the 90-degree heat of the summer season. May and September are the best months to plan your visit.
You may spot mule deer, antelope, and desert whip snakes while visiting Little Sahara State Park. Small lizards are common here, and if you enjoy bird watching, you’ll be happy to know the park has 15 species to add to your birding journal.
There are 214 designated RV campsites found among Little Sahara State Park‘s three campgrounds. All of the sites include electric and water hookups. You’ll be within walking distance of restrooms and showers in all of these campgrounds. Campsites feature picnic tables and grills, and they are spacious, but shade is limited.
You will need to make a reservation for your Little Sahara State Park campsite online before you arrive. Campsites start at $25 per night. You’ll need to pay an additional $10 per person to use the sand dunes.
Pets are welcome at Little Sahara State Park campgrounds and recreation areas. All pets must be kept on a leash, and you are responsible for cleaning up after them.
