Located near Athens, OH, Strouds Run State Park spans 2,606 acres, including the 161-acre Dew Lake. Strouds Run is a composite of several properties once owned by pioneering families who farmed the valleys and harvested the old-growth forests. Today, the woods are second-growth, left undisturbed for more than a century. Most of the land consists of deep ravines, narrow ridges, and steep hillsides. With the park only five miles east of Athens, Ohio University uses the lake for many of its watersport team activities, including rowing crew. Smaller communities, like Nelsonville, Amesville, and Coolville, OH, are within a short distance of the park.

Strouds Run State Park
The campground at Strouds Run State Park provides 78 primitive RV campsites. Picnic tables and fire rings grace each campsite. Fresh drinking water is dispensed through water stations placed around the park, and pit toilets serve as restrooms. Visitors to the park enjoy fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, and a 900-foot swimming beach. Boats are limited to 10-horsepower motors. A concessionaire rents boats for those who do not have one. Fifteen miles of trails meander through the forest and around the lake.

Carthage Gap RV Park
Carthage Gap RV Park sits close to Coolville, OH, which is 20 miles southeast of Strouds Run State Park. The park offers 135 RV campsites with full hookups that are available year-round. These RV campsites are grass-covered, so your rig may require some leveling when you park. The campsites are spacious, with some accommodating rigs up to 90 feet in length. Most of the sites are pull-through. The park is lined with trees and there are two small fishing and swimming ponds; The ponds are well-stocked with pan-sized fish. Two playgrounds, one designed for younger children and the other designed for older children, are available at the campground. Restrooms with flush toilets, a hot shower facility, and a laundry room complete the facilities. The owners strive to welcome everyone. An ice cream truck visits the site three times a week. Carthage Gap RV Park is one of the highest-rated campgrounds in the area.

Burr Oak State Park
Twenty miles north of Strouds Run State Park sits Burr Oak State Park. Over 90 campsites, of which 16 offer electric hookups, can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet in length. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. The park covers 2,593 acres of area, with 661 of those acres being Burr Oak Lake. Boats are welcome and are allowed to have motors up to 10 horsepower. Five boat ramps provide ample access to the lake, and boat rentals are available at the camp store. A public swimming beach allows visitors to enjoy the cool water during the hot summer months. Restrooms with flush toilets, a shower house, and changing booths sit alongside the swimming beach. Other restrooms are spaced throughout the park. Water spigots are conveniently spaced in the campground, and a dump station is available to empty RV waste tanks. Twenty-eight miles of hiking trails lead to impressive views and unique rock outcroppings. Though a short loop trail provides an easy hike, most of the trails are considered challenging.

Strouds Run State Park is a primitive environment close to a densely populated urban area. Dew Lake is stocked each year with rainbow trout and other species for the enjoyment of visitors. Angling, boating, canoeing, and kayaking are some of the favorite sports enjoyed here. Hikers and bicyclists share trails that wander through the densely packed forest during the spring, summer, and fall months. In the winter, the hiking and biking trails convert to cross-country ski routes.

Strouds Run State Park
Most travelers approach Strouds Run State Park through Athens, OH. To get to the park from Athens, travel east on Mill Street until it merges with Ohio Highway 32 East/US Highway 50 East (OH-32 E/US-50 E). Drive for three miles and turn left onto Township Highway 213A. Follow the road directly into the park.
