Inside Mohican State Park
No matter what level of outdoor adventurer you consider yourself, there’s plenty to see and do at Mohican State Park. Maybe you’ll just wander a hemlock-covered footpath, or maybe you’ll grab your mountain bike and get a little dirty -- either way, you’re sure to enjoy the view.
Hiking and mountain biking are two of the most prominent activities park visitors participate in, with an acclaimed 25-mile trail beckoning whether you travel by foot or by tire. The park’s trails are separated into several smaller, day-trippable excursions, including gorge rim paths as well as those that wend their way by waterfalls.
Fishing is allowed in Mohican’s Clear Fork River, which is one of only three streams in the entire state of Ohio that’s stocked with brown trout. Anglers can also pull up largemouth bass, bluegill, and white crappie -- so long as they have a valid Ohio fishing license
Boating, kayaking, tubing, and swimming are all popular activities, particularly in the hot and humid summer. Pleasant Hill Lake, while not technically a part of the state park, is very nearby and offers boating opportunities without horsepower limits.
Hunting is not allowed within the state park proper, but it is available in the state forest next door so long as you have proper licensure.
Fishing
Pleasant Hill Lake and the streams in the park offer excellent fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, and white crappie. Wolf Creek is a hot spot for smallmouth bass, and Mohican's Clear Fork River is one of only three Ohio streams stocked with brown trout. You must get your Ohio fishing license before angling in the park.
Geocaching
There are several geocaches at the park for those seeking hidden treasure. You can use your smartphone or GPS device to find one. Once you do, you can take a prize and sign the logbook. However, remember to bring an item with you to leave in the container for the next adventurer.
Nature Watching
Bird watching is popular at Mohican State Park, with dozens of species of birds to add to your birding journal. Be sure to pack your binoculars to see wild turkeys, bald eagles, and various songbirds.
Flora and Fauna
The forest and woodlands of Mohican State Park feature white oak, red oak, black oak, red maple, white pine, beech, ash, and tulip trees. Additionally, you'll find sycamores, willows, hawthorns, and dogwoods. Living among the trees are white-tailed deer, skunks, opossums, and red foxes. You may also spot smaller critters like dusky salamanders, American toads, and gray tree frogs.
Hiking
Several hiking trails are available for adventurers in the park. The Gorge Overlook Trail is 2 miles long and takes trekkers to a scenic overlook. The Hemlock Gorge Trail is a difficult trek for more experienced hikers and takes guests to a scenic covered bridge. The Pleasant Hill Trail is perfect for family excursions and is a relatively flat, short trip around the lake. The bridle trails and mountain biking routes are also open to hikers, but watch out for riders.
Boating
You can kayak or canoe the lake and waterways. For those who prefer a more leisurely experience, the Mohican River is popular for tubbing in the summer. Access points are located in multiple spots throughout the park.
Biking
The Mohican Mountain Bike Trail loops the gorge, passing through the park and into the state forest. This 25-mile trail has been featured in the media as one of the best mountain biking trails in the state.
