Legion State Park in Mississippi is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who want to mix history and nature. This historic park is the fourth state park the Civilian Conservation Corps developed during the Depression years and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Since then, the park has carefully constructed all new buildings to blend with the environment and imitate the existing rustic-style architecture. The park's showcase structure is the unaltered Legion Lodge, which was built in the 1930s and is now used for special events. In addition to being rich in history, the park is a popular destination for water sports, hiking, and picnicking.

Legion State Park has five air-conditioned cabins, and these spaces are equipped with basic kitchen equipment, bed linens, and a stone fireplace.

Natchez Trace Parkway
Since the Natchez Trace Parkway is close to Legion State Park, you may want to camp at this campground. There are three sections: the Meriwether Lewis, Jeff Busby, and Rocky Springs. All these sections offer primitive sites available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Unfortunately, there are no showers, dump stations, or electricity. If you are looking for a spot to boondock with your rig, these campgrounds are the best choices in the area. There are no fees to camp in these sections. However, you will want to get there early since the spots do fill up in the spring and summer seasons.

Starkville KOA Campground
Whether you are a novice or experienced RVer, you can count on the comfortable accommodations at Starkville KOA Campground. Located on the sandy shores of Oktibbeha County Lake, every site has a beautiful water view. You can enjoy the porch swings, picnic tables, and pavilion at this property. This KOA is minutes away from downtown Starkville and Mississippi State University. For those animal lovers, you might want to check out the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge. If you want to book a site for the night, you can expect to pay $23 to $55.

Legion State Park
The family-friendly Legion State Park is considered small and encompasses 453 acres. However, the RV camping spots have everything you need to enjoy the outdoors at your RV campsite, such as grills and fire rings, and there is plenty to keep outdoor enthusiasts busy throughout the park. The Mississippi Wildlife, Forestry, and Parks Department stocks the two lakes with fish to ensure sportspeople enjoy their time angling. You can also use the lakes for recreational kayaking and canoeing. The park's hiking trail is ideal for birdwatching, identifying native flowers and plants, and spotting wildlife.

Inside Legion State Park
Legion State Park is the perfect place to enjoy some recreational water activities. This park includes Lake Palila and Lake Toppasha, and they are great spots to fish for bream or bass. If you plan to fish, you will need a fishing license from the office. In addition to that, there are playgrounds and nature trails throughout the park.
Fishing
There are two lakes in Legion State Park, and you can fish from a boat or the shore at each. They are the 12-acre Lake Toppasha and the 4-acre Lake Palila. Common catches are bluegill, largemouth bass, and sunfish. Remember to get your fishing license before angling at the park.
Nature Watching
You are sure to spot various birds around the campground or while boating or trail walking. Birds found in this area include red-tailed hawks, great egrets, red-headed woodpeckers, blue jays, great blue herons, Canadian geese, and many others.
Stargazing
The park is a wonderful place to stargaze because it is far from city lights. You can head to the lakefront with a blanket or set up a telescope at a picnic table to enjoy a fascinating evening of watching the heavens.
Flora and Fauna
This park offers an excellent opportunity to take photographs of wildflowers and native vegetation. The nature trail is well-maintained and takes you through wooded areas where, depending on the time of year, you will see blue phlox, Carolina vetch, and red buckeye. The park is also home to various mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. You may see eastern gray squirrels hopping among the trees and white-tailed deer grazing in the meadows. Hiking
A gravel nature trail circles Lake Toppasha at the park. It is 1.6 miles long and has a few hilly spots, bridges to cross, and stairs. If you are looking for more options, the adjacent Tombigbee National Forest offers several challenging hiking routes with spectacular views.
Boating
The lakes are ideal for canoeing and kayaking. Motorboats are allowed on Lake Toppasha, and there is a boat ramp near the pavilions.
How to Get to
Legion State Park
From the town of Philadelphia, MS, take Hwy 15 North. At the four-way stop, turn onto Hwy 14 East. Then turn left onto North Columbus Avenue. The park is 2.5 miles down this road on the left.
From Starkville, MS, take Hwy 25 South to Old Hwy 25 North and turn left. Drive three miles, and then you will see the entrance to the park on the right.
Entering Legion State Park
Parking is available at the entrance, the boat ramp, and the Legion Lodge. The park charges $2 for day use for everybody over the age of five.
