Recent conservation efforts have succeeded in setting selected areas of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline aside as natural habitats. One of the most unique of these reserves is Janes Island State Park. What separates Janes Island from other parks is its division into two distinct parts, with 260 acres of the 3,160-acre park on the developed mainland where a conference center, campground, and rental cabins greet visitors. The other section takes up the whole of Janes Island, which is maintained in its pristine and natural state and is unapproachable except by boat, canoe, or kayak. Locals from the nearby communities of Crisfield, Pocomoke City, and Rehobeth, MD, often visit the park. Visitors from distant metropolitan areas, such as Philadelphia, often take a vacation or a weekend holiday to enjoy Janes Island State Park.

Janes Island State Park Campground
The campground at Janes Island State Park offers 104 RV campsites with grated fire rings and large picnic tables. The sites are spacious, clean, and secluded. All campsites are pull-through and accept rigs up to 35 feet in length. A dump station is available, allowing RV campers to empty their waste tanks. The bathhouse showers and the restrooms with flush toilets are ADA-accessible. Visitors are welcomed at the camp store, where they can rent boats, kayaks, or canoes. Boat ramps on the mainland side of the park make it easy to launch boats of any size.

Castaways RV Resort and Campground
If you prefer staying at an RV campground with all the amenities, consider Castaways RV Resort and Campground. The campground lies 50 miles northeast of Janes Island State Park. There are 372 RV sites that can handle RVs of any size. Fire rings and picnic tables sit at each campsite. The resort offers four bathhouses with hot showers and restrooms with flush toilets. Laundry rooms that are attached to each bathhouse are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. A hot tub is available for use by guests from 10 a.m. until sunset. Dogs live high at Castaways with two gated dog beaches and a dog wash station provided by the park. The camp store is open 24 hours per day for the use of all guests. An arcade room houses various games. Guests enjoy spacious private beaches with incredible views. A concessionaire rents boats, Jet Skis, and one pontoon boat and schedules parasailing sessions on request. Fort Whaley RV Resort and Campground lies 48 miles northeast of Janes Island State Park. The campground has 136 RV campsites available. All the sites are spacious and well-maintained. Fire rings and picnic tables populate each site. A modern bathhouse provides hot showers and clean toilet stalls. It is open 24 hours a day for the guests' convenience. Attached to the bathhouse is a coin-operated laundry facility. For entertainment, the resort maintains a coin-operated arcade room. A mini-golf course rests beside the general store. Most people visit Janes Island State Park to bask in its solitude and natural beauty. Thirty miles of water trails on the park's island section lead to isolated and pristine sandy beaches. The Chesapeake Bay yields a healthy crop of oysters, mussels, and crab each year to visitors as they wander the shorelines. Boating, kayaking, and canoeing between the two park sections are protected from wind and surf by the island’s landmass.
How to Get to
Janes Island State Park
Salisbury's quickest route to Crisfield is to take United States Highway 32 South (US-32 S) to Westover. Continue straight on US-32 S as it changes into Maryland Highway 413 South (MD-413 S). Continue driving on MD-413 S until you enter Crisfield. In Crisfield, turn left onto Maryland Highway 460 West (MD-460 W) at Crisfield High School. In a half-mile, turn left onto Byrd Road, and 200 feet later, turn right onto Skipjack Lane. Drive down Skipjack Lane to the park entrance.
To approach Janes Island State Park from Philadelphia, get on Interstate 676 (I-676) at Penn Square and North Broad Street. Take I-676 for one mile. Turn onto Interstate 95 (I-95) for 77 miles into Dover. Exit I-95 onto Delaware Highway 1 South (DE-1 S) until you hit Delmar, where DE-1 S turns into US-32 S, which takes you to Salisbury. Follow the Salisbury to Crisfield instructions above to get to the park.
