Bogue Chitto State Park
With a river, 11 lakes and over 1,700 acres, there is a lot to do at Bogue Chitto State Park. Popular activities include fishing, boating and hiking. The park has horses that you can ride if you don't have your own. Guided horseback tours that you can choose from include one-hour, two-hour, half-day and private tours. Kayak, canoe and tube rentals are also available at the park.

At Bogue Chitto State Park, visitors will find plenty of activities to keep them busy all year, whether floating down the river in an inner tube or strolling around the sandstone formations of Fricke’s Cave. Bird lovers will enjoy watching the many birds throughout the park including the brazen prothonotary warbler and majestic swallow-tailed kite. During the summer, the park hosts many educational and nature programming, including astronomy night and ranger-led hikes. There’s also a 9-hole disc golf course if anyone is up for a challenge!

Hiking, Biking, and Horseback Riding - Lace up your boots or grab your bike and explore the miles of trails that weave through the park, including the popular 4.8-mile Gorge Run Trail where you might even glimpse turkeys, rabbits and other wildlife. There are also 14 miles equestrian trails for riders with their own horses.
Water Sports - Enjoy the Bogue Chitto River by tubing down the river or launching a canoe or kayak into its waters. If you don’t have equipment, there are rentals on-site. Kids and adults alike will have endless fun at the park’s water playground, which has a 200-ft long water slide and six waterfalls. The park’s 11 lakes are well-stocked with fish like catfish, bass, and perch, making them perfect for an afternoon of fishing from the pier or by the shore.
Fishing
You can fish from the lakes, the Bogue Chitto River and Bonner Creek at Bogue Chitto State Park. Spotted bass, catfish, gar and crappie are popular catches at the park.
Nature Watching
Alligators, turkeys and deer are some of the common wildlife sightings at Bogue Chitto State Park. You may also see gopher tortoises, otters, wild hogs, coyotes, gazelles and foxes. Early mornings around trails, campground areas and the lakes provide the best birdwatching opportunities. Species you might see include red-headed woodpeckers, prairie warblers, eastern bluebirds and mourning doves.
Stargazing
You'll find good stargazing spots at dark areas by the water. Bogue Chitto State Park has some of the best stargazing in Louisiana.
Flora
The water-loving cypress and tupelo trees are the predominant flora in the swamp. Other plants to see at the state park include Spanish oaks, maples and black cherry trees.
Hiking
Fricke's Cave features sandstone spires with pebbles on top and two-foot-tall sandstone formations. You can walk on a boardwalk to admire the unique geological structures. They're too delicate for you to directly walk on them. Take the River Trail for a relaxing 2.2-mile hike through the woods to the river. Gorge Run Trail, a moderate 5.1-mile hike, ventures through the woodlands, hills and along a creek. The Discover Nature Interpretive Trail, a 0.3-mile loop trail, is off of Gorge Run Trail. In total, you have 21 miles of trails to explore in the park.
Boating
You can go tubing, kayaking and canoeing on the Bogue Chitto River. The park requires that you return to shore by 7 p.m. If you plan on renting a tube or other water flotation device, note that rentals close at 2 p.m.
Swimming
You're allowed to go swimming in the river during daytime hours. There are white sandy beach areas along the Bogue Chitto River that you can relax at when you're not swimming. You can also have water fun at the on-site 200-foot water park. It features water slides, water spouts, wooden waterfalls and other playground equipment.
Biking
Ride your mountain bike on Zephyr Trail for a fun spiraling adventure through the woods, over hills and along the creek. Bird Dog Trail is another popular mountain biking route. It's 1.4 miles and rated an intermediate difficulty level.

Bogue Chitto State Park
Bogue Chitto State Park is located at 17049 State Park Blvd., Franklinton, LA 70438. From Franklinton, head southwest on LA-10 W/Washington Street toward Mott Street. Continue onto LA-16 W/LA-25 S. When you reach Fisher Road, make a left turn. After 1.4 miles, turn left onto C C Road and left again onto Par Road 99. Continue onto Bogue Chitto Drive/Thomas Road. Turn left onto State Park Boulevard and after 0.1 miles, you'll see the state park on the left-hand side.
