Inside Jenny Wiley State Resort Park
Jenny Wiley is home to elk, which were introduced to Kentucky as part of a wildlife re-introduction program. Before they were brought back, elk had been gone from the state for almost 150 years. Keep an eye out for them, and try some of these other park activities:
Biking: There are three mountain biking trails of varying levels of difficulty, from the Short Loop Trail at 0.8 miles to the Switchback at 1.9 miles.
Birding: Spring Warblers are a big draw at Jenny Wiley, along with migratory birds that stop off on their travels. You may also see American Redstarts. You’re likely to find many species of birds all year-round at the park, and the Jenny Wiley Executive Golf Course is a great place to spot eastern bluebirds.
Boating: There is a boat dock with launch ramps and pontoon boat rentals on Dewey Lake.
Fishing: Dewey Lake has largemouth and hybrid striped bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie. Fish from shore or take a boat out for a day on the lake. If you didn’t bring fishing gear, as at the park about their loaner program that allows you to check out equipment for free.
Hiking: There are over ten miles of hiking trails for all abilities at the park.
Nature Center: Just down the hill from the May Lodge, the interpretive center shares natural, cultural, and historic facts about the park and surrounding area. Get a closer look at a Beech Forest and learn about some of the animals that call the park home. Learn about the pioneer woman whose name graces the park, or visit a replica of a coal mine and learn about the mining history of the region.
Outdoor Theater: Jenny Wiley hosts many outdoor performances at the amphitheater. Check their website for a schedule and information on tickets.
